My husband has an Exped Hyperlite Synmat. A seam failed on our last trip, and it turned out the glue in the little repair kit was no longer good. Fortunately it was the last night. He seems to have fixed it at home with a clothes iron, but I’m nervous about the repair failing and / or other field repair needs.

I was going to order a repair kit from Exped, but their kits now use UV glue and a battery operated UV light, and trusting an electrical device with a battery that we chuck into a pocket and forget till it’s needed seems… iffy?? Am I being silly about that?

Any other suggestions for something that would work on a seam failure as well as on a puncture? I’ve seen recommendations for Tenacious Tape and the thermarest glue dots, but I’m assuming those wouldn’t be good on seems, right?

I have seam grip, but the dry time is brutal if this happens at midnight.

Thank you for your thoughts!

I have used the glue dots with tape over them with very good success in the field on multiple pads.  instant fix.  They were mostly not my own.  The in the field repairs were never done over again with the suggested longer lasting patches once home and they stayed in place for many, many more nights.   The hard part is finding calm water where you can immerse the pad to pinpoint the leak, especially in the desert.  I would suggest a small pen to mark the hole so you can find it after drying.

A couple of years ago I had a pinhole leak in my Exped pad and use a very sticky  pine sap with good results.

Tear Aid and the dots both look like great products, but would we be able to use these on a separating seam? Seems like it would be hard to get a non-liquid to cover the full extent of the separation.

Exped has excellent customer service. I’d contact them.

I would be skeptical of repairing a seam.  Mechanically, it’s hard to repair that.

Maybe inflate, and then roll around on top of it more roughly than you would in normal use to try to get it to fail

I had an Exped Downmat explode on me when a seam failed – I had no idea there would be so much down in them!  I contacted Exped, and they said they’re unable to repair the seams.

I contacted Exped about a blown baffle on a ten year old mat and they offered me 50% off a new one or one of their seconds for free.

That’s interesting.  I’m in the UK, so perhaps that’s why they were unable to help.  Their website says the products have a 5 year warranty, and that punctures aren’t covered under warranty, but that they’ll repair punctures for free.  I’ll try contacting them again…

Geeze, this is a good offer. A ten year old mat? Exped would have been justified in saying, “hey, entropy dude, get over it and buy a new mat.” Things wear out, the baffle cannot hold, mere anarchy is released upon the world, as someone said. Or something like that.

It would always slightly outrage me when people would return battered and scruffy five year old boots to REI and demand a refund.

Not that Terran did that! He did not. I’m suggesting only that Exped went above and beyond normal customer service.

Just on a fluke. I only asked if they could repair a blown baffle. The kicker was that I bought it at a discount on eBay from an unauthorized dealer. It was never under warranty. Otherwise they would have replaced it. They were just being generous. Even paid for shipping. I opted for one of their seconds which was a double mat, but I couldn’t find any flaws.
