I am close to buying a Durston Gear Xmid 2 but wanted to know of other options that could qualify as a 2+ person tent.  The Xmid is between 50 and 52″ depending on pitch.  We all know the overall design is excellent.  But I wanted to know of other tents that would be wider than that but not considered a full 3 person tent.  Trying to stay below 3 lbs.

Thoughts?

River Country makes several tents with 5×7 footprint around 3lbs. I have no experience with them; just noticed that they exist.

The usual way is to buy a 3-person tent. Tarptent Rainshadow 3, MSR Freelight 3, Big Agnes Tiger Wall 3, Marmot SuperAlloy 3, and Locus Khafra are all in the vicinity of 3 pounds.

Yes thanks for that.

And yes, I am considering a 3 person tent now.  Tarptent has the new double wall Rainbow 3 at 3 lbs as well.

I wonder if TarpTent has any plans for an Ultra 3 man tent.

I’ve had a River Country Products Trekker Tent 2.2 for perhaps 5 years and it really ain’t bad given the low-low price.  Mine weighs 2.82 pounds rolled and rubber-banded with guys but no pegs/poles/storage bag.  It’s a classic 5′ x 7′ A-Frame “pup tent” partial 2 wall with the fly and sides made out of PU Coated Polyester (ahead of its time there).  Ton ‘O room for one; tight for two.

Like many of us here I have too many tents, from big Coleman pop-up dome for six to X-Mid 2 Pro, but if one were on a serious budget or just starting out I’d give the Trekker Tent 2.2 a look, or maybe better yet the Trekker Tent 2V (V for nice vestibule); looks kinda nifty.
