Attempting a one day Pemi Loop in late August.  The last time I tried this was in late may 2016 and there was so much ice and packed snow on the trail that I snapped a trekking pole and shredded my yaktrak pros.  I had to bailout at the halfway point.

In august there should be very little (if any) ice but I am still very concerned with the rocks which tend to be very slippery.  As I am looking to move fast and finish in a single day, I am interested in your opinions on whether to use trekking poles or some sort of slip on nano-spikes.  Nano-spikes tend to be geared towards ice – not rocks but trekking poles are only marginally useful on many parts of trail given the huge rocks you would encounter.

So which is it?  Nano-spikes, trekking poles or both?

It would be hard to imagine you really needing your spikes in August. I did a trip up there in early June wearing Luna sandals! There was still some ice, but imagine it’s gone by now. I did bring trekking poles and would general recommend them.

I’d recommend trekking poles for Garfield ridge coming off Lafayette if you’re heading clockwise. Otherwise I personally wouldn’t take them.

You wont need any microspikes.

Yup, I agree with Richard on this.  I actually think microspikes on the rocks would make traction worse,  particularly while descending.  There won’t be snow there in August.  Go with a pair of trail runners with sticky soles like La Sportiva Ultra Raptors.
