OMM (Original Mountain Marathon) Sonic Smock

OMM is a British outdor gear company which specializes in clothing & packs etc. for mountain marathon and trail running. The Sonic is a alternative to other minimalist wind jackets like the Montbell Tachyon and Montane Featherlite 7 in terms of weight. Comes in at 2.1oz or 60g for mens size Large

Excuse the bad photos!

Imgur album: A few photos of the jacket

Pros:

  • Weight: 2.1oz / 60g (size large).
  • Packs down VERY small. Easily fits in a jeans front or back pocket.
  • Sized to as a running jacket to fit over a baselayer only so size up for more layering.
  • Stuff pocket with velcro closure located in collar.
  • Cheaper than other similar options (on sale quite often on wiggle.com). Mine was $42 new from eBay.
  • Good breathability. Comparable to the RAB windveil which is my preferred wind jacket. Far more breathable than the Patagonia Houdini which I find too stuffy.
  • Good water resistance. Not as good as the RAB windveil though.
  • Nice thumb loops and long enough sleeves for them to be used comfortably. Cuffs are elasticated and a good fit
  • Collar is a great fit. Snug, but with room for a fleece neck gaiter. Material feels soft against a beard.
  • The zip is good and somehow never seems to get stuck despite the very thin material.
  • cord lock at hem

Cons:

  • Possible durability issues. I’ve worn it 20 times and it’s showing wear. Some of this is from not being careful enough, however there are some loose threads on the cuffs and some of the material on the inside is fraying near the zipper. I caused a small rip in one of the cuffs and a couple of tiny holes from thorns through carelessness (unexpected bushwhacking). The jacket was less than half the price of the Montbell Tachyon or my RAB Windveil so if it does not last as long it’s not the end of the world.
  • If worn directly against sweaty skin like with a short sleeved shirt, the material on the inside can be clingy. Not found it to be a big issue when wearing it, but it’s noticeable when you try to take it off.
  • Sized short. Possibly this is because it’s intended as a running jacket.
  • No hanging loop when packed into stuff pocket
  • Possibly a pro depending on your taste, but it very much looks like a running jacket. The Houdini and Windveil can pass for more casual city clothing, but this cannot.

Anyways that’s about it. I’d recommend it, however it needs to be treated with care.

Damn typos! Should be ‘outdoor gear company’ and ‘an alternative’.
