Hi everyone,

I’ve posted this to NWhikers.net but wanted to get this group’s thoughts as well.  My buddies and I are planning a trip to Olympic National Park in late August and wanted to get some thoughts on our planned route.  We are still early in the planning stages so any advice would be appreciated.  Right now we are planning on starting at Graves Creek and hiking through Enchanted Valley to the Dosewallips River where we would head northwest to Hayes River and continue north to Dodger Point.  From there we would head west along the ridge towards Ludden Peak and Mount Ferry and then eventually hitting Cream Lake and following Cream Lake Creek to the Hoh River where we would stay at Lewis Meadow.  From Lewis Meadow we would packraft down the Hoh River all the way to the ocean at Ruby Beach.  We have 8 days in the Park to do this.

The main areas I wanted to get advice on are: is the Hoh river runnable in late August on a packraft?  We called the Ranger station and they said it should be but wanted to check b/c we know water will probably be low.  The other main question is about the portion of the trip in the Bailey range where we cross country travel from Dodger Point to Lewis Meadow.  Anything we should note about this route and how long do you think it would take to do this piece?  Could it be done in a day?

As an FYI, all of us are in our late 20s and in good shape and have routinely done 15-20 mile days.  We all have a lot of backpacking experience and some packrafting experience and cross country travel/navigation experience as well.  Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi Erick,

This sounds like an awesome trip. I wish I could answer some of your questiosn but unfortunately I am only familiar with the quinault / dosewallips area. I suppose you will not do the gorgeous loop around the lacrosse basin (sleeping at lacrosse lake or so), it will probably not fit in your trip plan if you have only 8 days.

Currently the road to graves creek is not accessible for cars, but perhaps that will be cleared by august. Another thing to note is that the quinault area is known for its bear activity, last year it was closed for a few months because the bears got too assertive.

There are a few blogs of people that regulary through hike the olympics and where you might find answers, one I can think of right now is:   http://www.barefootjake.com/ .

I was at Graves Creek a couple days ago.  The gate is closed right at the bridge across the Quinalt.  There are places you can park there.  There’s also a boat ramp right there and boat trailers parked.

There were a couple cars parked there when I was there.

You can walk into the Graves Creek trailhead.  It adds 6 miles.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the update.  I saw on the park website that the Graves Creek road is out.  We’re actually making a few changes to the trip as the mileage is getting pretty high.  Instead of starting from Graves Creek I think we’re going to start from the Obstruction Point Trailhead and head through Cameron Pass to Hayes River then Dodger Point.  Then, instead of heading down off-trail following the Cream Lake Creek we’re going to take the High Divide Trail up to Hoh Lake and the Olympus Ranger station.  Appreciate all of the advice!

Thanks Link.  I have been using barefoot Jake’s blog a lot and have gotten some very good information from the packrafting and NWhiker forums.
Thanks again!
