Hi,

I have a Nunatak Skaha that I bought used a couple of years ago.  It is maybe 10 years old, but seems like an anomaly.

It is a size large and the exterior fabric appears like it may be Epic, has about 3-4 inches of loft and weighs 19 ounces.  That is super heavy for a Skaha in this size it seems.  I am assuming that it must have a significant amount of overfill.  I recently got an Arc Teryx Cerium SV and the Skaha has significantly more loft.

But even with the overfill I am still somewhat perplexed by the weight.  Seems awfully high for a Skaha.  I think the standard weight in this size is about 11 ounces.

Any thoughts on what this?  Is it perhaps a much warmer piece than I originally thought when getting a Skaha?  It seems quite warm from my experience using it, but it’s always hard to compare the warmth of puffy jackets unless you can do it side-by-side.

thanks for your help

Are you sure it’s a Skaha and not a Kobuk? 19 oz. is more like a Kobuk. If it has zippered pockets, it’s probably a Kobuk.

The jacket is a pullover with half zip and a kangaroo pocket in front so I assume it is a skaha. I guess it puzzles me a little because I would not have thought you could even get a skaha with 7 ounces or so of overfill

i am assuming that the extra weight must be from down since the design appears the same as the standard skaha and the shell material could not add that much weight. The loft is pretty impressive. It looks more like a 20 or 10 degree quilt in terms of loft

I have a size large that I got a few years ago before the sale of the company was complete. At the time the site said 13oz for standard Large in black Epic. I got a tad more girth (like a custom Large plus size) and it finished at 14.6oz with hood and kangaroo pocket. It does not have the loft that the OP describes but given this I think that it’s fathomable that you’d arrive at 19oz depending on the options chosen. Also, I sent some orange material to Richard Nisley a few years ago to have him test it. He kindly did and reported a slightly higher weight than the 1.7ozy that was indicated by the former owner on their website at that time, 1.99ozy. So, knowing that and the loft described (significant overfill) I think it could finish at 19oz. That would make for a very warm and effective “sweater,” with a likely ability to keep you warm at camp into the 20’s.

On a related note, I’m personally glad that I got the tougher fabric on this garment. The Epic option is no longer available per the site. The other materials are more fragile. That said, I’d trust Jan at Nunatak with any project. Nunatak under Jan’s leadership has flourished and I’d gladly pay 10-20% more than a competitor to have his company build my gear. He has really smart ideas and I think we haven’t seen the best to come from them. No affiliation; just a satisfied customer.
