Now that we’ve moved to the NYC metro area for the next several years, I’m interested in exploring the northeast. Any suggestions for a trip starting in May? I would like to start off with a 1 or 2 night trip once the weather is a bit warmer, and then perhaps do a longer thru-hike (maybe around 100 miles or so). I’ve heard great things about the Adirondacks. Maybe also NH stuff? Maine? This is really my first foray into the Appalachians, with the exception of one trip in the Roan Highlands in NC.
Most of my bpacking is done in Colorado in July-August, so I’m used to dramatic scenery. Thoughts? I also need advice on stuff like how to deal with black flies and the more humid weather out here. How cold will it be up here around 5000′ in May? Would it be comparable to, say, Colorado in the summer?
