First, thank yall for help on a car camping tent, I did review all suggestions, so much appreciated.  Need to obtain a bping tent now for three season use with my new pup, will be lab/Shepherd size.   Single wall Silnylon has had too much condensation on many nights in the Sierra for me, so I sold my original style TT Squall a few years ago here.  I like my ZPACKS Solplex, but that’s way too small with a pooch added in.  I sold my Hexamid, took up too much space when staked out, but with a larger shelter needed now, I’ll have to realize a larger footprint will be made now maybe.  I do not care for a tarp/bivy combo, too little protection/headroom/fussing for me, I sold my combo after a trip a few years ago and got my Solplex at that time.  Looked at HMG, ZPacks, but hard to decide, so a little food for thought needed.   I’m happy with cuben fiber, seems to be holding up good, but I’ve only used it without a dog.  Hope I’ve covered my wants.

Looking for–

UL-under 2 lbs or so, 2.5 max w/tent pole/s if possible, bath tub bottom or great ground water protection

Reasonable staked/guyed out footprint, only one door and vestibule needed, but not mandatory.

Ease of setup

Use with tent poles

Price not a high priority

Need by mid May?

I just picked up a nemo hornet 2p for me and my dog. Full double wall construction, weighs 2lb1oz (including 6 shepherd hook stakes in a cuben stake bag, not including stuffsacks. I set it up in the store and was pretty pleased with ease of setup, haven’t used it in the field yet. Two doors and vestibules, semi-freestanding, bathtub floor, roomy for one plus a dog (probably a little cozy for 2 people). The floor seems a little delicate, so I am taking polycro to put underneath.

I have been using a hexamid solo plus for me and the dog, which has also worked well, and I intend to keep using for trips with a drier forecast, or when I am intending to use trekking poles. For wetter weather, or if I want to set up a base camp, I am looking forward to using the nemo.

You can get a 9×9 mid in cuben with a half inner and have a palace. Even overkill. See usual suspects for examples. Biggest drawbacks are footprint size and price. If you (or your dog) ever had company there’d still be plenty of space.

I love my Hornet 1-P… I can imagine Caledonia’s suggestion of the 2-P is about ideal.

Is it just the floor or are the sides a little thin on material used?  I use a polycryo gc.

Well, the fly is 10D, the floor is 15D sil/PU. As with most UL gear, one should try to be somewhat gentle with it. I just mentioned the floor because of the fact it gets the most abuse.

So if you get a new dog who hasn’t been backpacking, I would run a few practice trips with some cheapo tent (see Walmart, amazon for options). Car camping or backyard camping should work for this.

Practice trips are real trips, pup is only 8 weeks old now, will take him to the Mojave Desert week before Easter to camp with some stovies.  Have a new car camping tent coming Tuesday for that trip.  Appreciate the info.  This motivates me to check out suggestions.  Like to take advantage of the rei sale, use my dividend maybe.

Yep, dividend plus 20% is how I picked up the hornet myself. And exposing a dog to tents while still a puppy is awesome. I wish I had had that chance with my dog. On her own she is mellow and good and hasn’t done any damage to tents, but when we try to take our other dog, both of them get too playful and hyped up and tents have suffered. The older one has no respect for barriers of any kind. He likes putting dog doors in things like tents and screened in porches.

The older dog is not my dog, to add clarity. That one is my boyfriend’s. His dog ownership philosophy is “let dogs be dogs”. Oy.

At 36 inches, how narrow is it on the ceiling when sitting up?  I’m 6 feet.

Got a pm from Jay, 1p is going to be too small, don’t want a tarp and unable to open the provided link on my tablet.

I’ve been very happy using my Duplex with my dog (65 lb) but he is an unusually calm fellow. I could imagine a very active pooch having issues with the netting. No problem with the floor and I never trim my dog’s claws, although they stay smooth and naturally not too long because we do short, local hikes 4-5 times a week.

I have the Solplex, would only need to get one more pole for a Duplex.  Paying/paid quite a bit this last couple weeks in taxes on capital gains, need to sit down and see if spending the extra money for cuben is in the cards.  Thank you for further samples.  I did have a SMD shelter a few years ago but after setting up in my yard, sold it.  I like the headroom in both the Duplex and Triplex, saving just a little over other shelters, looked at TTs again.

Playing with a dog in the morning while still in the tent is not a good practice.  )

That weight wasn’t bad.  After taking my time, I ordered a ZPacks Duplex, almost ordered the above Nemo, close decision.
