    Probably.
    Do you sterilise your cookware at home with alcohol wipes? No? Then why do it when out walking? Why not just wash?

    Raw muesli for breakfast – YES! I make my own muelsi in a 20 L drum. Lasts about 3 months. NO pre-soaking.

    I sterilize my cookware at home every time I cook. Stove-less well… I thought I’d improvise. Probably overkill though.

    I’ve never sterilized cookware in 53 years on the planet, just washed, rinsed and dried. Never been sick from it, as far as I know. If I’m on my own backpacking, only me eating from a container, I don’t even wash, just rinse. If it’s more than one, I do wash the dishes, since you never know…

    I just soaked some steel cut oats for an hour or so, no heat. They were pleasantly chewy. Darwin OtheTrail  mentioned he started doing no cook meals.

    So I’ll jump in feet first, download a good portion of my nonsense, and hopefully someone sets me straight before I go out and hurt myself…. I used to teach nutrition; so I’ve looked into the subject. Caveat. I just found out the data I was using for whole eggs was in error. Don’t know the source of my error. (We should also be very careful when people selling toxins suddenly promote some healthy aspect of their poison.
    Vaping-solutions are gluten free!)

    Next: one of the things no one but those of us on the Asperger’s spectrum (and often as not the wrong, but most interesting, usually hair raising trail): Great mountain climbers sometimes abandon their attempt at the great 3000nder because of hemorrhoids. All those sherpas and no one could haul up some veggies?

    So here’s my rough sketch of my backpacking food. It ain’t the lightest in the world, it’s based on the stuff I eat every day at home. I think it tastes pretty good. It contains only one veggie (cabbage) and 1 piece of fruit. Why is there no freeze dried technical foods? Two reasons. First as soon as you do anything to food whether it’s prepare it to be sold at MacDonalds or you freeze dry it, you start stripping it of nutritional value. Second, all the extra weight is water. We need water, so hauling some of it in our food is not unreasonable. Hauling an extra 1/2 liter per day right from the start…after 3-4 days begins to become a bit questionable.

    Please note: a lot of calories in Olive Oil. I read a whole book so you don’ t have to. Get the best stuff you can. Costco sells first pressing (date of harvest must be on the bottle or it’s lampetta, only good for oil lamps. A liter is about $11. How do you know it’s good? swallow a teaspoon, if it makes you cough–it’s good stuff.) Another thing about olive oil: it wants to be in a dark glass bottle, light and plastic–pas bello. I can take 27 ounces in one of my Klean Kanteen bottles (with a stainless steel lid, added weight 6.4 ounces) 709mL, or 60mL/day about a 12 day supply.  Fresh eggs? Fresh eggs keep, the plastic egg carriers are with some precaution adequate to the task (I think my generation gave up on these because of all those monster sized Golds Gym Hormone eggs back in the day didn’t fit in them).

    If you get anything at all from my nonsense, at least take some fresh green onions into the wilds. Even uncooked.  What’s raw and too tangy at home, on the trail is a nice slow chew. My calories?  A bit low. I’m 62, my metabolism is significantly lower in my dotage–even when I’m going up 1500 meters, it’s cold and I’m on the wrong trail. Oh and add a few of those Starbucks instant thingies.

    The value of this might be to think about different food items on the trail and suggest some to me  (all those candy bars and junk food are full of transfats.   Do you also laugh when the old grainy mountain climber movies show them with cigarettes hanging from their gobs? There’s not that much difference between a cigarette a hotdog and a Snickers bar… Want to be able to do this when you’re my age? (OK. I’m not immune to the lure of the Snickers, and it’s been three years and two months since my last box of Honey Nut Cheerios….)  TJ= Trader Joes, Nut packs are little bags of various nuts but also sweetened cranberries. Weights are package weights. So steel cut oats, that’s a half cup dry.

    Is that 1.09 kg per day? If so, that’s rather heavy.
    Using good quality dried foods we usually figure on about 750 g/day as being enough for sustained walking. So you might want to look at dehydrating some of your stuff.

    The heat of the stove, when applied to a pot, would sterilize it. Same concept of bringing water a boil. I often have boiled water in a pot after dinner (after cleaning it), then letting it cool a bit, so I wash hands, face and not brush my teeth with 34* water from a stream ;-)

    I’ve read about thru-hikers soaking their (grains, oats, noodles) over several hours but never tried it myself until today.

    It works!

    My breakfast was tasty. Thanks for the tip, David.

    I have lots of new ideas now for no-fuel meals (at least in warm weather…I still think the value of fuel in cold temps is HIGH).

    Also, a nod to the comment about lack of coffee and confusion. Duh.

    I drink coffee every morning in real life but it rarely appeals when I’m on the trail. I can’t explain why.

    Why stick with just oatmeal.  Try grits, rice, couscous.  Just add whatever extras you want.  I stay away from the instant – no texture and way too sweet.

    And nude hiking is very liberating :)

    With rice; avoid brown rice if you want any meaningful soaking performance. I’ve tried that lately, not much chop. Unless you insulate your pot and bring it to the boil first.

    I’m yet to test white rice (at home tests) but I suspect it will perform better than brown rice with a cold soak. Perhaps the longer grain varieties will also be better… larger surface area to volume ratio?

    Actually, it is the other way around: smaller grains offer higher surface area to volume ratio.
