I’m planning a trip to New Zealand with my girlfriend and we’d like to stay in DOC huts some nights. We usually use a double sleeping quilt to save weight when backpacking. Would this work in the huts (if the sleeping bunks are individual, we’d each need our own quilts)?

    Hi Justin,

Unfortunately the simple answer is “it varies” from hut to hut.

Some huts do have individual bunks (particularly the older, and the smaller huts, as well as the great walk  huts), while others have communal sleeping platforms.

Another thing to be aware of is some huts have mattresses and others don’t.

    What routes were you planning?
