New lightweight rain jacket for layering, autumn, alps?

Hi there,

I’m living in the Alps in Austria and in autumn do a lot of typical heights (photography) up to 3200m.
I’ve got a very lightweight Rab event pull-on, but I’m realizing it’s getting too small for autumn use as there is not enough space for the insulation if you’re inactive/waiting at around 3000m – so I decided to look for a new one. I will keep the Pull-On for warmer warm times.

I usually take my Rab Generator Alpine (Primaloft) with me. I use this jacket for skiing, ski-touring, etc. It’s not exceptionally warm, but in this case I just take an additional layer like a down or primaloft vest with me.

The rain jacket I’m looking for should:

  • not have any insulation (I prefer layering)
  • full length zip
  • pit zips if possible – the activities can get quite hard
  • be as lightweight as possible since pack weight is at the limit already

I’m aware that the layering I described above could be improved as the Generator is a shell (although not against rain) on its own. But it breathes quite well and if there is no rain, it’s enough of a Jacket in the conditions I meet.

However, I’m open for ideas to improve the layering I currently have.
Any opinions on this?

I will suggest the Montane Spine.  It is a full zip GTX 3-layer shell with pit zips and at 10oz was the lightest 3 layer GTX shell with pit zips I could find.  I have used it on one 14 day trip in Alaska and was happy with it

Mont Bell also has a 3 layer GTX shell with pit zips that is 10oz

Outdoor research helium hd. Love mine. The pit zips are amazing! Full featured jacket, for minimal weight. Also, it is not the super slim fit like the regular helium jacket is.

Why not incorporate the Rab pull-over as part of the cooler weather system and simply keep layering over the top?

This is how I use my Montaine windshirt, base layer/LW Thermal layer.windshirt then my fleece/primaloft/down top
