I know there’s understandably been a lot of discussion about the SOS feature in the new iPhone, but do y’all think we’ll see a real-world, noticeable benefit from the new dual-frequency gps in our mapping apps? Sometimes Gaia gets a little flakey on my precise location and I’m wondering if this will help.

Yes, the dual frequency GPS will help… drain your battery faster.  Try Caltopo – they now have a mobile app that has displaced Gaia and Backcountry Navigator on my Android.  Best in class topo maps too, for when you have to do routefinding.
