Seems like disease-carrying ticks spread in the US as the weather generally warms.  It’s worse in more humid areas, but I’ve found ticks from New Mexico to Southern California.

Of course backpackers can spray their stuff with permithion for special trips or just the season.  Rural residents are more exposed, living with overhanging vegetation year after year … i.e. that one time they don’t renew the permithion treatment – think it’s every six washes that it needs renewal.
