If Lyme and other pathogens weren’t enough, another reason to treat your clothes and gear with permethrin: “Although domestic American ticks are a growing menace and transmit a dozen pathogens, no long-horned ticks here have yet been found with any human diseases. In Asia, however, the species carries a virus that kills 15 percent of its victims.”

Seems like disease-carrying ticks spread in the US as the weather generally warms.  It’s worse in more humid areas, but I’ve found ticks from New Mexico to Southern California.
Of course backpackers can spray their stuff with permithion for special trips or just the season.  Rural residents are more exposed, living with overhanging vegetation year after year … i.e. that one time they don’t renew the permithion treatment – think it’s every six washes that it needs renewal.
