I don’t like tunnel tents with sloping end walls (Nallo 2, Nammatj 2, Anjan, etc). And I have hoped that Hilleberg would make a 3-season version of their Kaitum 2 for quite a few years (and have bugged them about it). And presto, here it comes, in 2021:

I really like the idea of the poles all being used for the “living quarters” and not for an extended vestibule. Much stronger! No huge unsupported panels.

Wow – nice.  But still porky.  I would much rather have a TT Cloudburst with a liner for over 2 lbs less.

What they don’t say:  The heavier pole is needed to provide ample stiffness to hold the canopy’s shape when the door is opened.   Even so, you can see the stress wrinkle in the photo.  There are better front cover designs that keep the tension evenly distributed over the front hoop, even when the door is opened, or especially when the door is opened, because the tent shape is most critical in a rain/windstorm when the door is opened to get in or out.

With heavy enough poles you can make almost any tent a bomber tent.  But that is not the ‘L’ in BPL.

TT Cloudburst: With liner and middle (third) pole it weighs 65 oz => 4.06 Lbs (I used the TT website to calculate this. The liner adds 6 oz, and the middle pole adds 5oz to its base weight) Please correct me if I’m wrong (anyone).

So, the TT Cloudburst would be 10 oz. less than Advertised Hilleberg Helags Specs.

The tents are close in weight to each other..I am interested in both!

The third pole isn’t required for 3 season trips so shouldn’t be included in the calculation.

58 oz packed with liner.

Hi David, Ah, but from my point of view, the middle pole is what really makes the tent: stronger, more stable..even in summer (Here in WA state, Cascades) the wind can get fierce. So, apples to apples it’s 4LBs Cloudburst to 4 Lbs 10 Oz Hilleberg.

I’m primarilly a winter and snow camper so I consider an extended vestibule essential for safety and comfort so that “L” in BPL could also stand for Luxury, although I would term it Livability
