Hi

i’m looking for a new backcountry weather app/website that amalgamates existing services to provide ‘on the trail’ forecasts. i came across it from a link in a newsletter, checked it out and forgot to bookmark it. been googling every conceivable combo of search terms and can’t find it. searched ‘weather forecast’ here at bpl and it didn’t come up. what i remember is that it

  • amalgamated/pulled in data from existing sources and combined or rationalized it to give data for specific locations
  • may have been in beta
  • was a ‘community’ project, so not for-profit. developers were frustrated at not being able to easily get forecasts for trails they were backpacking.

i’m getting old but pretty sure i’m not getting senile. so don’t think i dreamed this up. but beginning to doubt that as every search has turned up nothing. if anyone has seen this site, can you post the link?

thx

Have you used Windy.com?

It can provide a forecast derived from a combination of major weather forecast models.  For any location. All you need are the long/lat coordinates.

Here’s an example.

Thanks. It wasn’t windy or trail weather, I think.

but windy looks like it does the same thing. Funny it didn’t come up when I searched.

Thx!!

Windy is the shizzle and worth an annual membership if you live someplace where the weather has real consequences (like Alaska). I do a screen video recording of the animated wind forecast on my iPad and save it into the photos app on my iPhone for reference when I am out on a trip in the backcountry with no cell service. I also do screenshots of the meteogram view. I have found the default European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) to be the most accurate for Kodiak.

meteo blue> I think it’s the British model but not sure if it’s state sponsored like the American GFS or HRR or various NAMs. The ECMWF or “European” model. There’s also the Icon which I believe is German.

Windy has all these models and allows you to compare the forecasts for all 6. The 3 European models seem to track together and the 3 American models definitely track. Sometimes they are all wrong-ish on real precision forecasting. Really weird sometimes to see the HRR which is for the continental US and updates hourly and can therefore update to the actual facts on the ‘ground’ miss something either related to timing or location but it happens. A lot.

Windy is the One Ring. One Ring to rule them all.

If you want to get really into the weeds Tropical Tidbits has like dozens of models (27?)

The European ECMWF  only fully updates every 12 hours. It’s supposed to operate at a focus of 9 km. It also does 4 pass atmospheric data processing which is why it takes so long. It’s above my knowledge grade to explain it but you can search and get the info if so inclined.

When the U no What is fixing to hit the fan in a few days and its a hurricane which requires quite a bit  (days. frantic days….;) of prep and etc. around here we count on the ECMWF. Really good on big features like hurricanes, but still can be off on timing and close scrape type weather situations like afternoon thunderstorms or scattered showers or broken/fragmented fronts. BTW read recently that all forecasts are getting trickier due to the somewhat erratic effects of relatively unusual warming/warmth.
