I have The STS Aero’s in the premium Large and the Ultralight Large.A cotton filled, a Zpacks stuff..The Air pillows are to bouncy and the other 2 are not firm enough..Should I just lay on a rock and fall asleep due to the headache or is there any hope..Thanks for advice.

air pillows – my head rotates around too much – I think maybe that’s the same as bouncy

I use seat cushion synthetic material.  Sort of like Apex or whatever, but it’s more stiff.  Fold it a couple times.  Cover made of Supplex/Taslan.  I’ve used fleece cover, but Supplex weighs less

I use the Klymit Cush pillow/seat. It looks ridiculous as a pillow, but I don’t find it bouncy. Perhaps because you’ve got a thinner air bubble which you fold back onto itself to get the thickness you want? They are also very cheap.

I use a Klymit X pillow that isn’t bouncy and my head stays centered.  As a side sleeper the “x” pattern works pretty well providing a recess for your ear.  If your pillow is on the pad it works, but if your pad is sized such that your head is off the pad, you will need something to raise it up.  When using my shorter neoair I put my pack underneath or often my food bag under the pillow.  I know, I know….but not in bear country.

Zpacks dry bag pillow with a down jacket stuffed inside.  I stuff the the down jacket into a smaller bag as to compress it and make it a little more firm.  One has to play around with the smaller bag size to obtain best comfort for oneself.  The pillow is also used as a dry bag during the day within the backpack in case of rain.

As I mentioned, I have a Zpacks dry pillow stuff, but all the cold gear, puffy jacket and so on is on my body so I don’t freeze.I use a Quilt and a Xlite pad,so the pillow needs to be elevated and on the firm side, or I will have to improvise on the elevation part.

Gerry Adams spells his name differently, thankfully, I don’t think I’d want to be mistaken for him…

I strongly suspect that UL pillow selection is the quintessential HYOH decision.

Bounciness can be cured by letting some air out. ;^)

Exped UL medium works for me. It has those nice little tabs on the side so that an elastic strap or shock cord can be used to hold it to the air mat. All pillows should have that feature IMO.

If you let the air out, it still moves from side to side.  Sort of like an upside down pendulum.  There’s a stable position to one side, and another to the other side.

This is definitely a HYOH problem : )

I want a Thermarest pillow like I have on my bed at home that is 12″-12″ and weights 2 oz.

Yes I let the air out to mess with them and just ain’t happening.

Jerry with a “J” is cooler..Unless “G” Cooks up some good pancakes and I could be persuaded

If you can get your hands on a Big Sky Dream Sleeper pillow, go with that. I think there’s a 7-9 week wait on orders but I believe it’s worth it.

I find pillows one of those pieces of gear where comfort is directly related to weight. Earlier I used a stuff and left over clothing. Now I rarely have left overs so I roll with an exped pillow like Bob mentioned above (also deflated for comfort). That’s about the heaviest I will go and simply lower my expectations…works for me.

Another direct relationship on the trail for me is miles traveled vs quality of sleep. Fancier pillow or not I often get a better overall rest camping than with all the sleeping gear available to me at home :)

Exped Large pillow. Also followed Stick’s footsteps and just got the Goosefeet Gear Down pillowcase. I really liked the air pillow already (its large enough and shaped so you can deflate some and not be bouncy) plus with the pillowcase it should be heavenly.

Jerry with a “G” means he’ll shoot your kneecaps off, unless he decides to blow you up : )

This is like my one luxury item. Me and my gf have both switched over to these. They are about 8 ounces and compress to about 1 liter but just as good as my at home pillow and makes a big difference in my sleep:

To be totally honest, no pillow will ever compare to the pillows at home on my bed… that sucks. However, after using a number of “pillows” over the years on the trail, I have settled on my large Exped UL Air Pillow inside a GooseFeet Gear Down Pillowcase. I don’t blow the air pillow up all the way and leave it a little squishy, then put it inside the down pillow(case). It cinches closed to hold the air pillow inside, and there is a single shock cord that will hold the pillow (mostly, especially depending on the air pad used) in place. This has been the best set up I have personally used, and feel comfortable in recommending it. Here is a write up I did on it a few years ago.

Chad..

What makes it better than the Aero’s as they look similar.. thanks

PostedJun 6, 2017 at 5:48 pm

Jerry, just looking at them, they look similar. I don’t think that the Aero’s were around when I picked up my Exped pillow though. As far as specs go, the Exped is a little larger in length and width, but 0.8″ thinner. The Exped is 0.6 oz lighter, but also a little more expensive. Either way, the down pillowcase is what makes all the difference for me! :)

Don’t dismiss inflatable pillows just yet.  You need to find one with baffles that keep it from just getting round when it’s inflated, like the Exped UL or the Klymit X pillow.  I’m very happy with the latter, though I’m a side- and belly-sleeper so I just need something to tuck on my upper arm.  I tie my bandana around it as an ad hoc pillowcase to avoid the icky plastic-on-face sensation.
