Hi everyone, I’m new to bpl and I have founded a lot of great info until now.

I have an old pack, the Jack Wolfskin atlas 2. I haven’t used a lot all those years, except 2-3 times winter camping. I would like to put it on a diet. I have weighted it at 4 lb 13 oz. The removable top lid weight 8.8 oz and the metal armature 6.9 oz.

So is it possible to bring it under or around 2 lbs? How much could the straps and excess material weight?

Your insight and ideas are helpful before I start cutting things ;).

Here is a pic of the pack.

Probably not, but the final weight depends on how involved you want to get, and if you’ll be using a sewing machine.

http://www.zpacks.com/materials.shtml lists various webbing and buckle sizes and weights.  That plus a tape measure and calculator will tell you how much weight you can easily trim.

A casual web search doesn’t describe the suspension, so it’s unclear what savings are available there, but if there’s a stiff back panel along w/ the aluminum stay, you might be able to easily replace that with closed cell foam, either in the form of a sit pad, or a full sleeping pad.

More options:

  • replace the draw cord w/ something lighter (z-line + tiny cord lock)
  • replace the webbing and buckles with narrower, lighter material
  • sew shut the lower zipper compartment and remove the zipper
  • mod/replace the waist belt
  • mod/replace the chest harness

With out sewing, I don’t think you’re going to get much under 3lbs.  Maybe you’ll approach 2.5lbs if there’s a heavy back panel you can remove.

Thanks Rene for your help, i’ll look at the link to see if I can estimate the weight I can save just cutting the extra. I’m ready to make a little bit of sewing, but if it’s to much complicated I’ll just find a friend to give it and I’ll buy a new one.

Here is a picture of the back. I don’t see how to remove the padding easily and making a good job.

Also can someone tell me if it’s safe to remove the straps located in the bottom of the pack?

2 pounds probably won’t happen, even if you strip it down to a bare bag with no lid.  I’d guess the shoulder harness and belt are ~1.25 pounds all on their own, with the back padding and whatever suspension is in their on top of that.  Hack away if you like, you’ll learn something, but it’s not likely to lead to a long-term product you’ll want.

I agree with Dave C. You might learn something about pack construction going through the process. I would sell or give the pack to someone who can use it as is, and then buy something else that fits your needs.

Thanks everyone. I’ll take a week to think about it. Maybe I’ll try to cut the unacessary parts, keeping it fonctionnal as it is. I’ll look for another pack for winter backpacking (around 60 liters). But with the canadian dollar that low, I’m limited to bargains or local buy.
