I’ll be hunting mule deer and anterless elk this October in Nevada’s Jarbridge Wilderness. I prefer to eat a cold breakfast both to save time and cut down on odors. Yeah, I could do instant oatmeal and maybe will but I get tired of it very quickly, plus there’s the wait for my ESBIT-fired Caldera Cone to boil the water.
So far this is what I’ve got:
home made fruit cake (This one is actually very good, contrary to horror stories about fruitcake.)
pre-microwaved turkey bacon and omelette cooked the night before
Fig Newtons and other nutritious homage oatmeal cookies
some lunch type foods like cheese and dehydrated apple and pear slices
electrolyte drink (Cyto-Max)
Any other ideas?
Jun 24, 2016 at 12:04 pm #3410551A trail bar breakfast is simple and you can eat on the move. You can follow up with a larger second breakfast (hot or cold) mid-morning after the sun warms things up a bit.
Jun 24, 2016 at 12:43 pm #3410558I love Mike Clelland’s Spud bombs, a savory bfast made from instant potatoes. You can change the ingredients to your liking or what you have available. On my fast and light trips I have been known to throw some water in the ziploc and put it in my pocket while I pack up camp. By the time I hit the trail it is kind of warm which is better than freezing cold. I then rip off the corner of the bag and squeeze as I hike! Alternatively it goes in my pot with hot water or during summer trips cold out of the pot.

Jun 24, 2016 at 8:07 pm #3410621It is Jarb-i-dge, Eric. No “r” in the middle.
And no, they did not rename it recently. Always has been Jarbidge.
You ought to know better than this…
Jun 24, 2016 at 9:19 pm #3410635Kind breakfast bars are nice
I have been thinking of taking English muffins or bagels and laughing cow.
Jun 24, 2016 at 10:06 pm #3410638I have a cereal with raisins or blue berries with powdered milk with H2O and maybe hard boiled eggs plus bagels with PB & honey!

Jun 25, 2016 at 8:44 am #3410692Homemade granola with milk powder or whey concentrate powder.
Jun 25, 2016 at 9:00 am #3410695Check out the Packit Gourmet Fruit Smoothies – They’re delicious and help to get you hydrated as well. You might not want them for multiple days in a row but a couple of them to enjoy over the week might be nice.
Jun 25, 2016 at 10:02 am #3410698Fruit cake sounds awesome.
I like pudding made from chia seeds, coconut cream powder (I buy it at an Asian market),chocolate whey protein powder, almonds and cacao nibs. I takes maybe 15 minutes to rehydrate cold. Yuuuuum.
Jun 28, 2016 at 12:30 pm #3411197Thanks guys.
>I forgot about breakfast bars.
>There’s also “breakfast drinks” that I could mix with water and powdered Milkman milk.
Cocoanut cream powder sounds good with that that pudding. My Filipina wife has some on hand so I’ll try it.
>Ooooh! Fruit smoothies! I’m gonna get some this week.

Jul 1, 2016 at 12:27 pm #3411780Bear Valley Bars are my standard backpacking and traveling breakfast. One bar is filling and easy to eat while packing up. Four flavors, relatively healthy, widely available.

Jul 1, 2016 at 12:43 pm #3411784I feel like I’m stating the obvious here but ProBars are widely available and seem pretty nutritious. I ate the Superfood Slam version almost every morning for three weeks on the JMT. I suggest a little more variety…
Jul 29, 2016 at 6:00 pm #3417261Consider DIY “Wake-up” Trail Mix-Coffee beans+ semi-sweet chocolate chips (M&Ms in hot weather)/alternatively chocolate-covered coffee beans+dried cranberries+nuts+ dried fruits of your choice. Add some oat cereal if you wish. Munch while packing up. Another, whey protein shake of choice with “Amazing Greens” or similar powder, add a breakfast bar or ‘breakfast biscuits” if you want more substance. Amazon had some caffeinated peppermints that tasted good. I think these are the ones I bought. Carried some in the tin and vacuum sealed the rest in a glass jar to keep at home. https://www.amazon.com/Penguin-Caffeinated-Peppermints-One-1-75/dp/B00EIIUI20/ref=sr_1_5_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1469836751&sr=8-5&keywords=caffeinated+peppermints
Jul 29, 2016 at 7:33 pm #3417273Oatmeal, butter, sugar, nuts (optional), dried fruit (optional), cooked in advance.
Better known as an oatmeal cookie.
If you don’t want to cook your own, these are pretty tasty (and dry enough to travel well):
Jul 29, 2016 at 9:19 pm #3417281Nido with granola cereal of your choice. Add dried berries/nuts if you want. Premix at home, just add water at camp. Much better than powdered milk.
Jul 30, 2016 at 10:24 am #3417329I also like Nido and granola, but if I’m in a real hurry (Bob Marshall Open for example)- I really like Erin Baker’s breakfast cookies- calorie dense (300-ish/cookie) and they taste good too :)
Jul 30, 2016 at 1:56 pm #3417362On the trail I mostly eat poptarts, Belvita breakfast biscuits, or honeybuns/bearclaws. Sometimes the choices are limited resupplying at gas station type stores.
Feb 8, 2017 at 3:50 am #3449376Try a bircher muesli. Take a ziplock with oats, milk powder and whatever flavour you like, add water before bed and mix, and by morning it’s good to eat. Banana and peanut butter is good combo.
Feb 8, 2017 at 7:55 pm #3449584I do Alpen muesli with whole milk powder, and the aformentioned Packit Gourmet fruit smoothies, all cold. But also warm coffee- takes only 1/2 esbit tablet.
Feb 9, 2017 at 6:30 am #3449619the 2016 Bob Open I did Erin’s breakfast cookies (2) and cold coffee- the cookies were good (and easy), the cold coffee (Via) was tolerable, but left a lot to be desired :)
not sure this year
Feb 9, 2017 at 8:18 am #3449626I’ve done brownies cooked with honey, oatmeal and instant espresso on a couple of trips now. I will start nibbling one as I break camp and finish it durning the first halt hour of hiking.
Feb 9, 2017 at 8:40 am #3449637Precooked bacon is a great invention. It is the perfect addition to breakfast or as a morning trail snack.
