Hey everyone, so I have a JMT permit that starts up September 10th. That was originally the only big trip I had planned this summer, but after getting some extra time off I hopped up to the northern terminus of the PCT and started heading south. I got from the Canadian border to elk lake in Oregon(~700 miles w/ the extra 30 from harts pass to the border) in one day shy of a month. Now I plan to skip ahead to do the jmt. Since I’ve been on the trail I’ve neglected securing a bear can, ideally the bear vault weekender. It looks like they’re out of stock for rentals. I was doing some 35 mile days in Washington, but was getting really burnt out. So I’m aiming for averaging just over 20 on the jmt. My only resupply will be VVR. I own a bv450, but that’s probably not gonna cut it. I don’t really want to fork out the cash to own a second bear can.

If I bought a bearikade at full price do you think I can sell it on gear swap? Does anybody want to loan me a weeender!!!!( wishful thinking), Should I tough it up and do bigger days with the 450? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Matt

Matt,

I have a 13″ Bearikade that I won’t be using for the next month since I’m in the Grand Canyon, I’d be willing to lend it to you.  You seem like a genuine fellow from your posting history, but since you haven’t been around so long I hope you won’t be offended if I ask for F&F payment for the value of it (say $250?), that I’ll refund less my postage cost when I get it back safely no later than mid-Oct?   I’m in Bozeman MT, UPS is open this afternoon, we’d have to figure out a 100% sure shipping method & destination.

“You could rent one from the NPS”

Indeed you can but only if you’re able to show up at a Wilderness Permit office during the hours they’re open and you will exit close to one of the Wilderness permit offices to return the canister.

You could take your BV450. If you supply at Tuolumne you should be able to get to VVR in 4 days at 20 mi/day. I’ve gotten 5 days in my BV450 without too much struggle. At that pace you should get to Whitney Portal in 6-7 days. If I remember correctly, from VVR or MTR until around Woods Creek crossing you don’t need a bear can so you could hang any food that won’t fit in your BV450.

Also, if you take 6 days from VVR to WP you could do this.

-VVR pick up 5 days resupply

-MTR is about 20 mi south of VVR so you could get another day’s worth of food at MTR from hiker buckets and leave MTR with 5 days worth of food which would get you to WP.

Ralph’s offer is very generous, I hope you two work something out. To your question about resale, just check Gear Swap listings and you’ll see that Bearikades sell within hours or even minutes of posting for high % of new cost.
