I was thinking…MYOG seems to be quite prevalent these days and I see some seriously amazing gear coming out of forum members. As someone who likes to make things as well, has anyone ever considered a medium for MYOG folks to trade gear? Not like Gear Swap where you have to post explicit ads…something like a page/forum where each member can post things they’ve made and consider to be made well enough to be worthy of sending to someone else. This would be like a member “portfolio” and those could be used to trade for other stuff.

For instance, I am becoming quite comfortable making tarp shelters. Not MLD quality, but good enough. I have made synthetic quilts and consider those to be of good quality. However, I have no desire to make a down quilt. But let’s say someone who makes awesome down quilts doesn’t want to dabble in shelters. I can make them a cuben tarp and they can make me a down quilt and we both basically get the things we want for just the cost of materials and our time. Thoughts?

I really like the idea.

One thing I could contribute is carbon fiber stakes…I bought a dozen arrow shafts, which would make around 50 stakes and I’d sell the extras. I made a dozen or so and stopped because other projects came up. I could definitely make the rest and trade them if people are interested.

I’d be interested in a caldera-like Ti windscreen/cone. I know someone else on here was looking into making a tiny windscreen for the BRS stoves as well

I wonder if we could just get a sticky at the top of the thread where we post what we have available to trade and what we could use. A good example of what I’m thinking of are the “Saddle Swap” and “Stem Swap” threads over at ThePaceLine.net:

Gear swap would be a good place for this, but great idea.  We still have GS in recent topics so good luck on getting a new forum added!
