In July 2021, I made an insert for my Duomid and carried it for 4 lovely weeks on the PCT. My primary goal was to have an insert that was a few inches wider than normal. Plus I wanted a slightly beefier floor material. The wider width prompted me to reposition the tent pole inside, which also affected the design in interesting ways. It was a fun project to build.

Design details
— fits current model Duomid.
— floor dimensions are approx 35″x88″, wider than a normal solo inner.
— pole goes *inside*. floor contact point is reinforced with a DCF Hybrid patch. i don’t use trekking poles, so i didn’t have to worry about damaging the floor.
— “coin purse” peak. push the pole up from inside, then cinch drawstring to close.
— the sleep area is ~27″ wide, which easily fits my large size neoair. This leaves ~8″ between the pole and door, large enough for lots of gear and/or a small fury friend.
— bathtub walls are extra tall at 8″ (5″ normal walls, plus 3″ extra extending up the slant). wanted to eliminate splashback.
— the front of the bathtub wall tapers from 8″ down to 5″ at the center for easier door entry
— the insert clips to the tarp at all four bottom corners, w/ adjustable shock cord for a nice clean pitch.
— the insert also clips upward to the tarp along all four ridge lines.
— rainbow zipper door.
— small front pocket for headlamp etc.
— small hang loops on the inside at strategic points.
— all the lines of the design are clearly marked with red permanent marker.

Materials (all from RBTR)
— floor is from a single 3 yard piece of 1.43 oz DCF (Light Green)
— coin purse peak is made from light gauge DCF
— mesh is 0.67 oz Noseeum Mesh
— #3 zipper
— Line Locs and mitten hooks
— 3/32″ shock cord
— black grosgrain

Weight: 13.37oz (including shock cord and DCF stuff sack)

Comparison to similar inners
— MLD SolomidXL innernet is 32″ wide at 10oz
— Ultamid 2 Half Insert is 33″ wide at 14.8oz

Nicely done and well thought out.  Hope you get a lot of miles with it.

Very cool and well done! I like the linelocs at the corners of the inner. Nice to be able to change tension at that spot. Does that shockcord have a hook at the end to connect to the tarp corners?

Looks like the ability to put the pole through the top allows you to have more covered floor space and livability. Great idea!

The heavier 1.43 oz DCF is a good idea, a lot more durable. Did you do any cat cuts?

if you mean along the net ridge lines then, no, didn’t do any cat cuts.. the net is really draping/hanging more than being under tension. so didn’t think it needed them. although i did reinforce the ridge seams with thin strips of dcf.

charlie —  yes, shock cord w/ linelocs + hooks at all corners. the duomid has its own hooks in some spots; if not i added hooks to the insert’s lines. there are also two more optional tie-out points at center rear (which i typically kept clipped in) and at center front (which i didn’t).
