Since my normal go to location, James Peak Wilderness, was covered in snow and I was just at LCW the previous weekend, I decided to hit a new area, Mt Evans Wilderness. I called the ranger station and discovered that snow would not be a problem – and it wasn’t.
We started Friday AM from the Deer Creek TH and climbed the Tanglewood trail from 9200 feet to 12k in 4 miles. Here is a view from the top looking south, in the direction we came from:

We headed towards Bear Tracks Lakes, which was a 2 mile descend from the saddle. Here is Mt Evans (14’r) in the background:

We then ended up at our destination and we were thoroughly pleased with the lake, view, and our spot for the evening:

Before it got dark I had the urge to use my Duece of Spades and when I discovered my spot to dig my cat hole, I noticed this moose and her lil baby calf. They looked at me and slowly walked away (this pic only shows the mama):

The next morning the sun was in our favor and the lake looked awesome:

As we were gathering our water at the lake, guess who decided to show up for a drink as well?

It was the highlight of the trip. To see a moose and her baby come up, provide a show, and then head off around the lake was a live Nat Geographic episode. I wanted to snuggle the lil calf but doubt mama would approve.
A little PB&J with instant curry beans for lunch:

We stopped by Roosevelt Lakes and enjoyed some catchless fishing. Got a few bites but no real luck. I did see a Golden Trout in the water that looked like an albino. Pretty cool.

Campsite night two:

Cool area. I will need to explore the northern part of the wilderness next time. And bring a fly rod.
