“When Brad Treat of West Glacier, Montana, went mountain biking with a family member in late June 2016, a leisurely ride turned into a real life nightmare when he was killed by a Grizzly. According to reports by the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP), Treat was cycling just outside of Glacier National Park when he startled the roaming bear. Park authorities believe that Treat collided with the Grizzly, which then mauled him. The other cyclist escaped and went for help. When they returned to the area, Treat was found dead.”

From same article, a different Grizzly fatality:

“Upon discovering his digital camera, park authorities reported that the man had taken images of the bear at a distance of 75 yards while it was feeding on wild berries. The last five images were of the bear with his head up, followed by consecutive shots of the Grizzly moving towards him. According to park authorities, the final images were taken at a distance of 60 yards.”

Uh oh, bear moving closer to me, oh shit!…

I guess lesson is that 75 yards is too close to observe a Grizzly?  That’s quite a ways away.

from last week up in canuckistan …

A woman and her boyfriend were having a picnic down by Ghost River and witnesses say they came face-to-face with a grizzly and her cubs.

Coleman Blair’s father owns a campground in the area and he was driving when he saw the couple being chased by the bear through the river.

Blair rushed in to help and says by that time the bear had the woman’s arm in its mouth.

“She was hysterical, she was in shock,” he said. “From that point I looked over a saw a couple of cubs in the tree line, maybe 50 yards away, and her standing there, still fairly aggressive.”

Rachel Lautard was hiking on a trail in Okanagan, British Columbia, when she heard loud footsteps behind her. Quickly turning around, she saw a dog run past followed by a charging black bear.

The Greenwood, B.C., woman had picked up the pace and became separated on the trail from family and a friend. They were camping near Conkle Lake Provincial Park southeast of Kelowna.

Lautard told CBC News (warning of graphic photos in link) she believed the black bear was chasing the dog and attacked her instead.

“The next thing I know I was on my back with this bear on top of me,” Lautard told CBC News. “I was wearing steel-toed work boots at the time and I was kicking and basically bicycling and screaming for help.

“He bit into my leg and he was holding on, but I was kicking as hard as I could…

“I couldn’t believe this was happening to me.”

another bear attack around canmore last evening …

The woman and a friend were cycling in the area when they came across what they believed to be a brown bear. As the pair tried to ride away, the bear struck the victim, who sustained an injury to her upper torso resulting in an internal injury.

Her friend was able to deploy bear spray and the bear ran away. The cyclists rode for a distance to where they could call for help.
