I am typically a function trumps form guy… just ask my wife. I typically don’t care how something works so long as it gets the job done, but there have been some exceptions. For years I have eyed the Kavu Chillba and the Montbell Umbero but just couldn’t bring myself to give them a try. I thought they were just too silly looking.

A couple of years ago my wife bought a MB Umbello for herself (she is cute in it) and then purchased one for me and strongly encouraged me to give a try.  Ah the things we do for marital harmony.  I still think I look silly in it, but I have really come to love the function of the hat.

It has better ventilation than any hat I have used even while it keeps my head dry in the rain. There is enough coverage that the sun never hits my face or neck. It weights 1.8oz and folds up small enough to fit into my pocket.  While it’s best in windless conditions, it continued to protect my head from rain in continuous 20mph winds. Montbell said the hat doesn’t offer UV protection though I used it for most of a year as a sunhat without getting burned. Just to be on the safe side recently I coated the inside with UV opaque fabric paint.

Looks like what the Zpacks guy uses !

Personally I prefer a very wide brim Henschel Breezer hat or a crazy wide natural palm leaf hat – you can get them with 5 or 6″ or even 8″ brims. Looks ridiculous but at the larger sizes you may not even need a shirt for sun protection!

The montbell umbrella though I find king for the hottest and suniest conditions – nothing beats full airflow with nothing on your head. And the hot fabric is also significantly higher than any hat. When there’s low wind it makes the heat even worse and thankfully that’s when umbrellas shine.

If you and your wife wanna be in on the latest trend this hat has been blowing up that new fangled app called the Clickety Clack or the Tickety Tock or something and it actually also looks super highly functional. They do not list the brim size or have different crowns but it looks huge:

I also considered straight up cutting out the top of the crown and replacing with mesh. Reminds me of those windshield folding sunshades that used to be more popular.

And to look EXTRA cool with a helmet on I highly recommend stuff from Da Brim 😂

Mark,

Do you have the rain or “crushable” version? I’m curious also, if you happen to know, if the Mallard color in the rain version is more blue or more green?

20mph is not bad. It seems that wide-brimmed hats start to buckle in winds at about that speed.

I have the “rain” version .   Mallard is more blue.  Mine looks very blue now because I used blue fabric paint on the inside :) Yeah… most brimmed hats start to buckle in winds around that speed.  The only exception has been very stiff brimmed baseball style caps.

In case anyone wanted a quick reference point :)

Anyone remember the Urban Sombrero from Seinfeld?
