The Montbell Super Dry-Tec U.L. Rain Pants have been my go-to rain pants for over 5000 miles of backpacking, from long trails to weekend trips close to home. I’m currently on my third pair, as Montbell updates these periodically, which speaks to both the longevity of the design and my continued preference for them. I’ve often preferred rain pants over a skirt or going without, since they provide both warmth and protection from precipitation. They feature knee-length side zips that make them easy to pull on over boots, and the fabric keeps water out while remaining breathable. In practice, this lets the pants dry quickly when I get caught in a storm. Their ultralight design makes them easy to carry without taking up much pack space, so I rarely have to think twice about bringing them along.

Over time, I’ve noticed some durability limitations. The pants tend to hang low over the backs of my shoes, which can cause mud buildup or wear on the hems, especially on muddy or rocky trails. If my stride brushes the inside of my ankle repeatedly, the fabric can get muddy and may eventually rip if I snag it on something. Despite these issues, they’ve held up well through thousands of miles, and I’ve come to trust them for rain, wind, and cold mornings when my summer hiking shorts wouldn’t provide enough coverage.

One feature I’ve come to appreciate is how they pack down so small. Even after hundreds of miles, they fit easily in the side pocket of my pack, making them simple to carry as a “just-in-case” layer. I’ve also found them surprisingly effective as a wind layer or light insulating layer on chilly mornings.

Overall, the Montbell Super Dry-Tec U.L. Pants are a strong choice for hikers who prioritize weight, packability, and breathable protection over maximum durability. They are reliable in wet-weather conditions, but it’s worth remembering that they trade long-term toughness for ultralight performance.

Best for: Ultralight backpackers and thru-hikers who want lightweight, breathable rain protection that packs down easily and works over boots.
Not best for: Hikers seeking highly durable pants, roomier fit, or a lower-cost option.
