I just ordered from their Japan online store and apparently it gave me free shipping. I know at the time some of the products offered in Japan were not available in other stores… https://en.montbell.jp

Their shipping policy page states:  *Free Shipping on all International orders over ¥20,000.

Older thread, I know.

Did you have to pay any taxes or custom fees when your order arrived in the US?

I wonder if the items only available on the Japan website have a different fit? I know that Asian market clothes can fit smaller.

Hi Justin,
I have tried a couple of items both in the JP and US model/sizing and I think most of the time the best is going up one size.

I have tried a couple of items here in Japan where they also had a US version available and mostly I am a Medium in US sizing, but a Large in Japan sizing.

Arcteryx Medium fits me perfectly, Patagonia Medium is also the best size (though a bit boxy for my body).

As an aside, with other Japanese brands I am often XL. Patagonia for example has a separate Asian sizing on certain items here and they are also XL for me (while a Medium for their US sizing). Same for North Face Japan.

Hope that helps.

Very interesting.  The jp store has a chameece High neck sweater at 6.8 oz. you lose the venting capability of the zip but that is a light fleece layer. I wonder what size weighs the 6.8oz.

Ben,

often manufacturers take the Medium size, saying it is the average size/weight (though I doubt that a bit if you also have XL and occasional XXL offerings).

I can compare a couple of garments with the weights listed and as they are on my scale:

Montbell Torrent Flier Jacket:
Listed 215g. My Large weighs 227g. (∆5.6%)
I think they have adjusted the weight listed this season because I remember mine came in under weight listed (while a Large instead of Medium).

Montbell Chameece Vest:
Listed 148g. My Large weighs 153g. (∆3.4%)

Montbell Clima Air Fleece Jacket (Hi-Loft/hairy fleece):
Listed 428g. My Extra Large (oversized for me to layer over multiple layers) weighs 443g. (∆3.5%)

The chameece are great pieces I think. I can highly recommend getting the Chameece Vest as it is a very light option to boost your core a bit on the go, while not being so warm as to immediately overheat. Dries quick, and lasts a long long time. It’s also often unavailable in the US.

Hope that helps.

I just picked up a couple pairs of the U.L. STRETCH WIND PANTS, I haven’t been to the Montbell store in Portland for a few years and don’t remember what the Dynamo wind pants are like. These seem very light and nice fabric, haven’t had a chance to use them yet.  Most importantly they offer a women’s wind pant so I picked up a pair for my wife, the US store doesn’t seem to have any wind pants for women… Also, the yen is quite low compared to the USD so even expensive stuff like the Mirage is quite discounted.

Justin:

I picked up a Mirage Parka from the JP store, and the Large fit just like an American Large. However, they do call it the “US Mirage Parka” so I don’t know if any of their other items have that useful distinction.

Anyone know how much fill is in the non-Light version on the Alpine Parka? It’s box baffled and pretty attractive at 14.8 oz and $180 shipped.

Looks like a Mirage with 800 FP. No fill amount given though. Email them?
