Hey All,

I’m hiking about 300mi of the CDT starting at the Colorado border and going north this July and I need to select a shelter for two.

Right now I’m thinking about a MLD Trailstar or MLD Grace Duo with the MLD Serenity Inner. I’m hoping someone could speak to the bug situation in the San Juans/Colorado Trail and how necessary and inner is, as the Trailstar cannot easily accommodate a double inner (although I know they exist). I’d also be open to any other suggestion or knowledge you may have :).

Thanks!

Having tried both options, and others, I would suggest that you consider using a zpacks duplex.  They are typically available on the Gear Swap forum for around $450 with little to no use.

As for the TrailStar, I really like it but I had a couple of problems.  First, no inner net.  You can buy one but it only increases the weight of a shelter that already weighs more than a Duplex.  Second, It needs a lot of space…level space at that.  Site selection became a challenge and was doubly so when i was with a group.  I often found myself camped 100s of yards away from my hiking partners as we could not all find level spots of an appropriate size in the same location.

As for the MLD or HMG tarp systems, they both were able to address my site selection issue with the TS but I hated the lack of headroom.  I then tried a MLD Cricket with a netted bivy (when necessary) and missed the lack of room to spread my gear out.

Net-net, the zpacks Duplex has been a great shelter. It requires less space than a TS.  It has plenty of head room and it has been great in a wide range of storm conditions.
