I am in the market for a MLD duomid and I understand that they got a little bigger in 2017 and I wonder if anyone has experience with the old and the new version and how much a difference it makes? I have an opportunity to buy an old one used

Also will the new nest fit the old sizing?

My son has the new one and used it with another scout at Philmont. I tested it out and it’s not exactly big, but I’m 6’3″.

At my size, I wouldn’t want something smaller, particularly if you use the inner.  YMMV.

I can’t compare the old to the new (mine is a 2015) but the Duomid is fantastic for one, but isn’t a two person shelter.

The newest one is a bit bigger, but only by a few inches. Old and new InnerNets will fit fit both old and new Duomids.   Biggest difference in the older vs newest ones is the newest Pro fabric, larger #8 YKK WR zipper, no zipper storm flap and mid 4 main seam tieouts.  If there is no storm flap, it’s the newest one. But we do continually update and improve small features, etc.  ALSO –  Right now new orders ship in about 1 week!

Thanks, why was the storm flap eliminated?

Storm flaps can stop rain from coming through a zipper when you have a basic (non-water resistant) zipper. But they are often annoying to use because they snag in the zipper and they don’t work that well because the wind can blow them open. If you have a water resistant zipper already, then there’s little point to having one – particularly if the zipper is only over the vestibule anyways. Omitting saves weight and snag hassles.

I have a 2018 Duomid. I’m 6’1″ and sleep on a X-Lite. I wouldn’t want to be much taller.

My wife and I would probably be quite comfortable in it, but I would not want to share it with someone else my size.

Thanks,  that’s interesting info on the zipper. How does a water resistant zipper do in heavy rain? It sounds like just as well as a storm flap? With the Duomid, the zipper is not just over a vestibule.

With the zipper flaps, I suspect the performance depends a lot on the specifics of the flap/zipper. If the zipper is horizontal and you’ve got a good sized, heavy flap then it’s going to cover that zipper quite well. Whereas if the zipper is near vertical (like the DuoMid and most trekking pole tents) and light then it would be easy for the wind to blow it open, all else being equal. If the flap is also not secured in any way (e.g. velcro) then it would be quite easy for wind to blow it open. The same flap might work splendidly in calm conditions with heavy rain, but poorly in blowing rain which might hold the flap open and quickly saturated a non-WR zipper. Features to anchor the flap (e.g. velcro) are generally annoying to use because you have to do them up/undo them, and flaps also tend to be annoying because when you’re rushing to go pee in the night they love to snag in the zipper.

Water resistant zippers (e.g. YKK uretek/Aquaguard) are waterproof except for the thin seam down the center.  When new they do quite a good job – they are pretty much waterproof – whereas the seam wears wider as they age. I suspect a flap does better in calm, heavy rain, while the WR zipper does better in blowing rains. MLD uses to include both but I suspect they started omitting the flap because it’s annoying and doesn’t really add much. I had a ~2012 DCF DuoMid that I snipped the flap off of.

I always slept in the backhalf of my DuoMid and kept the front as vestibule, so I wasn’t too worried. If you’re expected torrential conditions then it may be wise not to sleep under the WR zipper. I expect MLD would add a flap if you asked, which might be good in really soggy conditions as it would often reduce the load on the WR zipper.

“flaps also tend to be annoying because when you’re rushing to go pee in the night they love to snag in the zipper.”

Ya, that’s not the only thing that gets snagged in the zipper. Yow!
