Hi, first post here. IM wondering if anyone has done a side by side comparison of these two shelters. I’ve owned the Ultamid 2 and enjoyed it for the size. I’m looking for a new solo winter/shoulder season mid and am wondering how these stack up against one another.

I’ve read about all the differences but am looking for real world experience mainly on the Duomid XL. So any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

Hey Justin, just curious, why are you looking to switch out your ultamid?

I think the main difference between the two is that the pole on the xl is slightly offset, so it’s not taking up the middle of your shelter.

Inchwise:

Duomid XL:  L-104  W- 90  H- 59

65sq/ft

Ultamid 2: L- 107  W-64  H- 64

(Edit: oops wrote that down wrong, W-83)

63 sq/ft

So the duomid XL is wider and shorter length and height wise and has an offset pole.

Don’t have an ultamid right now but interested in picking one up during their sale unless the duomid xl is a better shelter.

Was hoping to hear from duomid owners. I have read a ton on each shelter and am familiar with their differences.

Im pretty set on ordering a new ultamid.

I had the Duomid XL but sold it and replace it with an Ultramid which I think is a much better option in all regards.  Way more room inside for 2 people (and dog) and one of them isn’t tucked up against a low slopping claustrophobic back wall while the two of you are on one side of the tent pole.  I tried to make it work with various pitches (low to ground, high off ground) but i couldn’t get that back wall to increase enough in it’s slope to really make much of a difference.  However, I did purchase a regular Duomid for solo camping and LOVE it; different geometry than the DuoXL, but the Ultramid really ticks all the boxes regarding usable space for 2, ease of set up and over all incredible construction, though the same could be said for Ron’s work with the exception of space for 2 in the XL.  I think it really comes down to what’s going to get wet when you open the door in a rain, and given what I perceive as the advantage of the Ultramid, I’ll take my wet chances.

Mark,

Did you go with a silnylon duomid or cuben? I’ve considered a duomid for solo use as well.

Well I went ahead and ordered a white ultamid 2 while the sale is still on. Perfect solo or +1 mid for mid-Atlantic winter trips.
