i guess this is gear, sort of…

Im looking for a good quality and detail map of Baxter park / Mt. Katadhin. I see national geographic maps offer one, but I’m not sure of the detail and clarity of these. Anyone have any of these maps or similar? Any input on the detail and quality they offer?

All Trails PDF at 1:50K

Here is an example of AllTrails.com map of Katahdin at 1:50K.

Maps can be generated at larger or smaller scales than this.  AllTrails uses the Trails Illustrated map data, but requires a paid subscription to access.  However, this will give you an idea what the printed product may look like.

The AMC Map linked by Richard looks interesting, too.  I wish there was some sort of image showing what the map looks like.

Zach, There is NO perfect map of the park at this time. The two recommended, AMC and National Geographic, are good and either is fine if you are limiting your trip to Katahdin itself. First: DON’T limit yourself: getting away from the big mountain will show you what a marvelous place the park is! Second, both maps have factual errors; for instance, the trails shown going to Twin Ponds in the Katahdin Lake area on the east side are both wrong. I know there are other mistakes, but that one leaps to my mind. Additionally, for a change-resistant area, there are constant changes. For example, both maps show  Center Mountain and Little Wassataquoik Lean-Tos that no longer exist. There is now one at Center Pond and another on a point on the south side of Wassataquoik Lake neared Russell Pond. There are other changes – – The historic Abol Slide Trial is still closed — you WILL get arrested if you try it! — there is a wonderful new trail on OJI, and the NW corner of the park is still a mess after a wind storm three or so years ago.  The people who work at the park are consistently helpful and knowledgeable, but it helps to know what you want to ask about! If you have more specific questions I will try to help — if I notice the query.

By all means visit the place and give yourself some time. It’s a wonderful gift Governor Baxter gave the State of Maine.
