Looking at doing a bunch of coastal hiking this summer on Vancouver Island. Gonna ditch the trail runners and take boots. Mine are old but in great shape, the soles have good tread but they’re slippery as hell.

What’s the best way to get some more traction? Scoring with knife? Gluing sand? Any suggestion appreciated.

Screw hex head sheet metal screws into the soles – the modern version of hob-nailed boots.

You can just buy hobnails. Amazon has them. Honestly, seems like a really bad idea. You’d just skid off the rocks.

I’m blessed to have an excellent shoe & boot repair shop not far from home. They have repaired, resoled and reconditioned leather items for me on many occasions and I can trust them to the job well.

Ask a local professional.

Old-school tricounis?  Available from Wesco  but really expensive.
