looking for a stout hiking/backpacking boots with wide toe box.

No trail runner suggestions please!

My Lowa Camino’s are killing my little baby toes (rubbing/blisters). Looking for a sturdy (with waterproof lining), durable, backpacking boots with a more anatomically shaped (i.e., wide) toe box. I typically carry 30-40 lbs including food and water.

Try Renegades… they come in “wide” widths

i wear size D width in my street shoes, however, the wide Renegades work great on the trail…so comfortable that, many times, I’ll just leave them on at camp, rather that shift to my camps shoes

Vasque Breeze comes in wide. I don’t know if you will call it stout or not, but it’s definitely a boot.

I had that problem, went to REI and asked them

They said Salomon x ultra 04 had wide toe box

Before I had 10 blisters.  With the Salomans I have had no blisters.  I’ve used them for several years now.

I found the Solomon Wide too narrow for me. The Keen Targhee has good width. I’ve switched from those to La Sportiva, but I had to size up.

ditto on Keen Targhee. Teva has surprisingly wide toe box boots as well.

I’m 14 4E, 6E is some.  In Canada I can’t find a single pair of trail runners big and wide enough so wear boots.  Over the years, I’ve tried on everything you could imagine, all the Keens, Merrells, Solomons, Columbias, Oboz etc.   Pretty much they’re all too narrow for me mid foot and or baby toe.  After breaking a bone in my foot that never quite healed properly in Solomon Quest Primes, I’ll never wear Solomons again.

The only thing that I found that is wide enough for me is the Lowa Renegade in wide size.  They’re also stout and surprisingly light for a robust boot (same weight as the Quests).  They’re Goretex and have been waterproof for me.  Keep them clean and air them out and I can wear them in the highest heat.  Being GTX boots, I do the old bread bag trick to dry them out.

If you don’t need them wide mid foot, you might get away with the Keen Targhee (too tight mid foot for me but OK in toe box IIRC) but they’re less supportive than the Lowas.

I’d go right to Lowa Renegade Wides.  They seem to be the best bet to meet all your stated needs.  Upsize half a size if you need to.  Grip is decent.  Wear has been excellent though I’m burning through my second pair.  I did have one boot start to delam at the toe after 100s of kms but sent them to Lowa Canada who repaired them for free and am putting many more 100s of kms on them.

I do a lot of bushwacking and cliff scrambling and have never damaged the upper in any way.

I have the same issue and used renegade for years. I also used Danners but those can be a bit heavy. Lately I have been using Topo Trailventure 2. Very light, very comfortable. The WP membrane is Event which i have found to be more breathable but just as WP as the Goretex boots I have owned. They dont have a specific wide version but I have found the regular to be plenty wide. Just consider sizing up by a half size. Not many left on their site right now so you may need to use other vendors like Zappos.

Holy moly, I just looked at the Lowa Renegade and the price is crazy.

Oh geeze I forgot about Oboz: very wide toe box and mid sole. Definitely check these out.

If you don’t mind flexible, zero drop shoes the Vivobarefoot Magna Forest ESC are amazing shoes.  They are foot-shaped unlike nearly any hiking boot.. tons of room for the toes.  The soles are some of the best mud-shedding soles I have ever used, they are on another level.  The stretch fabric by the ankle keeps junk out of the boots very effectively.  The leather with some waterproofing applied is both reasonably waterproof and reasonably breathable.  I normally am carrying less than 20lbs and use trail runners, but for heavier loads these are the ticket.  They also make a model which goes higher up on the ankles but otherwise is similar, the Tracker Forest ESC.

Zero drop “barefoot” shoes take some getting used to, but these are relatively easy to adapt to because they have more foot protection than most.  You do need to not slam your heels into the ground when walking, if you can’t avoid that then pass on these.  Make sure to try them on shorter excursions before doing a longer trek.

Many Oboz’s have an unusually high arch, something to consider, but some tend to be wide

Anectodatl recommendations are hard to rely on.  I’ve read many “wide” recommendations that were way too narrow for me.

This site is invaluable to get actual measurements of boot and shoe widths, plus tons of other objective data:

https://runrepeat.com/lowa-renegade-gtx-mid

They usually measure the regular widths but you can get a sense of the wides based on it

After mail ordering several shoes looking for long distance road walkers and returning them because they were too narrow, I used that site to narrow down to the Hoka Clifton 10s wides, and they were perfect.

Lately I have been using Topo Trailventure 2

I like that the WP version has a rock plate.  These are on my list to try but size 14 are hen’s teeth

I’ve been happy with my Lems boots although they’re my around town or camping boots.  All Men’s Boots – Lems Shoes

[I don’t what the deal is with this forum but I’ve put in time composing meaningful posts several times and gotten an error message saying: “Are you sure you wanted to do that?” and then it’s lost to the aether.

From now on I’ll have to copy and paste every post I compose in a document before trying to post it here so it doesn’t get vaporized.]

I was going to suggest Apis Mt Emey shoes for anyone who needs wide widths.
