Looking for New Shoulder Pouch for Bulky Compact Camera

For years I have used a ZPacks Shoulder Pouch to carry my camera. I cut a small box out of closed cell foam (to put around the camera) and kept it inside the pouch. The camera would easily slip in and out, while the draw string on top would keep it from falling out. I really like the simplicity and reliability of the pouch.

I recently bought a Sony Cyber Shot DSC RX 100. This is a great camera, but it is much bulkier. I cut the usual box for it, but even though I used thinner foam, it is a really tight fit. It doesn’t work well, so I’m looking for a bigger pouch. If ZPacks made a bigger version of the same thing (bigger diameter) I would definitely get that.

Gossamer Gear makes a similar shoulder strap that comes with built in foam (that is probably adequate for protection). It seems designed for phones, as it is rectangular in shape, with a fairly small amount of depth (1.5 inches in size large). They also make a “Feed Bag”, but it looks to be too small as well.

Any ideas?

Zimmerbuilt might make a custom pouch for you. He modified one of his existing designs for me in the past.

Yeah, Zimmerbuilt is a good option. I used the stock sizes for years until my Panasonic ZSx generations outgrew them, then he made a custom for my bulky ZS60. It was actually a bit too big, so I took it in at the bottom. Now I just sew my own.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll look into Zimmerbuilt if I can’t find anything off the shelf. Since I custom build the foam around it, being too big is no problem (I can always add foam). I should have mentioned that initially.

I have an RX100 and when carrying it use a Peak Design Capture Clip. The camera mount is secure and the camera more easily accessible than in a pocket/pouch.

The clips are convenient but many of us require camera protection- bashing through brush, traveling in the rain, packrafting, etc.

Let’s also not underestimate the damage that can occur from even a small tumble and/or impact. I lost a very expensive Summicron to – and I’m not exaggerating here, at all – a 24″ drop with the lens packed securely inside what was supposed to be a well-padded case. After that heartbreaker I began to include a 1/2″ layer of dense, closed-cell foam around my camera compartments: normal camera-bag padding might be okay for the hotel and the airport, but it doesn’t cut the proverbial mustard when you get off-pavement. The extra cushioning is well worth the extra bulk, in my opinion.

Also, bonus points for using the phrase “bulky compact camera.” That made me smile, because it’s so ridiculously accurate in so many cases.

My Lowepro Dashoint 10 is perfect for my RX100ii and it holds a couple of spare batteries and cleaning cloth.

Yeah, I’m afraid that the camera clip thing wouldn’t work for me, for the reasons mentioned. I would likely take the pack off, forget about the camera, and break it (I’m just not that careful by nature). I like my current setup (camera wrapped in foam, wrapped in a pouch) it is just too tight. I need a bigger pouch. [That sounds like the punch line for a kangaroo joke].

I keep my RX-100 M2 in a ZPacks hip belt pocket (my pack is an Arc Zip). While hiking on established trails the zipper is mostly unzipped so I can pull it out quickly if I want a shot. I don’t bother with any padding, but there would be plenty of room for the camera with padding if that might work for you.

My caveat: The flash died on my RX-100 M2 about 4 years ago so I bought an M5 as the family camera and demoted the M2 to backpacking duty. I’m not very careful with it, but haven’t had any issues.
