I have a small point-and-shoot camera, and I am looking for a case for it that I can attach to the shoulder strap of my pack, so it is readily-accessible without removing my pack. I have seen people using these, but I can’t seem to find one for sale anywhere, despite doing a lot of online searching.  Suggestions, please.  Maybe I am searching with wrong name for it.  Your help is most appreciated.

@ John

Search on the B&H Photo website.  Tarmac, Mountainsmith, Ruggard and many others make cases for point and shoot cameras. Usually they come with a strap that is detachable but also have velco or a webbing to attach to a belt.  ZPacks, MLD and others make pouches without padding that also attach to pack straps that might fit your camera.

I really like the Lowepro Dashpoint pouches.  They are padded, water resistant, reasonably lightweight,  and can easily mount on a shoulder strap. They come in three sizes.  The 20 weighs 2.2 oz. and is probably the size you are looking for.  The 30 weighs 2.5 oz and can carry a small mirrorless camera and lens.  The 10 might work if your camera is really small.

There also are a variety of shoulder strap pouches and hip belt pockets not made specifically for a camera that could do the trick for a point & shoot. That’s the same basic camera type I use, and I made a sleeve for it out of Reflectix to protect it and keep that in my hip belt pocket for easy access.

I’ve used these for years. Larger point and shoots might not fit. My Panasonic Lumix dmc-zsXX’s keep getting bigger for some reason.

Thanks, everyone for your great suggestions.  There’s a lot more out there than I realized,  I went ahead and ordered the Lowepro Dashpoint.  Seems to be exactly what I need.

I’m a fan of Zimmerbuilt’s shoulder pockets. Chris Zimmer is very flexible about custom sizes. Check him out.

Also I think Gossamer Gear has some zipper pouches that might work.

I have found more important than drop protection for point and shoots is dust protection. No matter how careful I am, at about 6-12 months the camera will have dust on it’s inner lens/sensor that can’t be cleaned.

Brad, I’ve noticed that with several point-and-shoots I’ve had.  My theory is that the  retractable lenses suck in dust when retracted.  I haven’t had that problem with my Olympus TG which relies on folding optics.  With a mirrorless camera you can clean the dust off your sensor (carefully!) with a sensor cleaning kit.  I’ve heard that you can do it with with a DSLR as well but have no experience with that.
