Looking for advice on a roomy DCF double wall (ish) trekking pole tents

I want to add one of these to my arsenal. I’d use it for single use mostly but maybe the occasional trip with my son. Probably going to take it on a fall alpine lake fishing trip. Something that I wouldn’t necessarily need to set up everyday. Also, might take this on an Alaska trip I’m planning in the next couple of years.

The two I’m looking at are the HMG Ultamid 2 ( plus inner ) and the Tarptent Dipole 2 Li w/inner liner ( I know the liner isn’t available now but a birdie said it would be soon ).

My thought on both:

The utlamid seems to be simpler to setup, has more room, and thicker? dcf ( 0.75 compared to 0.5 ). That last one is particular a good thing if going to Alaska ( look up skurka + dcf + hail, that was 0.5 ). Subjective, but I like the way it looks more. Downside is that it is a foot longer. Not sure how big of a deal that is.

The dipole 2 li can be about a half pound light without the liner, no pole on the inside, end windows seem really cool, and still plenty roomy.

My first impressions is that if I want to take this to Alaska than it’s a no brainer, ultamid2.

Any thoughts?

I’ve used a MLD Duomid with a half liner and a Tarptent Aeon Li extensively here in AK. I like the Duo for really stormy weather and the Aeon for trips with less finicky weather where I can take advantage of the light weight. Either would probably work fine for you. We never get hail here in SW Alaska. In general, I like pyramid tents more starting at the 4-person size, and appreciate the engineering and thought that goes into smaller solo or 2P shelters that maximize living space (plus integrated bug defense) at minimal weight like the Tarptent models.

If you go pyramid, I think the MLDs are noticeably better made than the HMGs.

The inners of the MLDs look pretty small with shallow bathtub floors. Just from what I’ve seen online. I could be wrong, but there isn’t much info about them. That’s the main thing that’s kept me away from MLDs duomids

Yeah, years ago I started with a ZPacks Hexamid(?) bug insert in my Duomid, which was a great pairing. Sometime later, I “upgraded“ to the MLD insert, and I actually thought this was a space-usage downgrade. But having seen many HMG, MLD, and Seek Outside shelters, the Mountain Laurel Designs DCF shelters are better constructed (Tarptent is comparable to MLD in construction quality, and offer more innovative designs). Look over the specs and then feel free to mix and match bug nests.

I will add that I most recently did a trip with my Durston Xmid Pro 2, and I have to say that after spending a lot of time in solo shelters, this thing was a freaking palace (and at a similar weight.) Each time, I find the pitch a bit finicky and never get the taut panels I am hoping for, but wow, now I know where to store all of my junk. I mostly do not carry it because it requires adjustable trekking poles, and I am a fixed-length-pole-when-possible guy.
