Hi,

Any suggestions for a roomy -25F down sleeping bag (mummy, semi-rec, or customized; not a quilt) for someone 6 feet tall, 170 pounds, and broad shouldered, where the girth is slightly wider at knee level and the total weight of the bag is under 4 lbs.

I realize that air space compromises warmth, but I naturally do a tree pose (foot on opposing knee) now and then in the night to avoid feeling claustrophobic. The bags I’ve used feel like I’m strapped to a gurney.

Western Mountaineering’s Cypress is huge when stuffed and relatively heavy and the Puma is a bit narrow; Feathered Friends’ Peregrine comes close but am concerned about knee level girth. Nunatuk only appears to go as low as 5F with their Alpinist. Open to custom options.

The Montbell Down Hugger had an elastic girth that may fit your needs. They discontinued, the design and they are discounted.

Not sure how often you plan to be out in those temperatures, but if only a couple of times a year, you could look into getting a 15F bag if you don’t have one already, and layer a wide quilt on top in the 40-30 F range. Perhaps employing a water-resistant Bivy as well.

Other retailers may have the Down Huggers on clearance.

I have no experience with their new design, the Seamless Down Hugger, but it seems to lack the elasticity of the old bags.

Feathered Friends’ Peregrine comes close

The FF Peregrine Measurements: 60″ / 56″ / 38″ 3lbs 12ozs Size Regular

The WM Puma Measurements: 64″ / 56″ /39″ 3lbs 7ozs Size Regular

Seems to me the Puma is exactly what you want? Thought’s?

Personally, I wouldn’t want a 60″ shoulder girth in a sub zero bag. 64″ is a nice compromise.

Thank you.

I just dug up the latest numbers from FF and WM. They may have recently modified their girths because the Peregrine is showing as wider at the hip to foot level compared to both the Puma regular and long:

FF Peregrine
Reg: 64”/58”/40″ (3 lb 14 oz)
Long: 64”/58”/40” (4 lb 2 oz)

WM Puma Microfiber
Reg: 64”/56”/39” (3 lb 7 oz)
Long: 66”/57″/39″ (3 lb 10 oz)

WM Puma Gore Windstopper: Same dimensions, 5 oz more.

So is there something of this quality and weight out there that is wider?

We hike winters in Canada so I need a dedicated bag that works.

I am beginning to suspect that there is nothing else out there.

Hark, manufacturers!

Ultralight hikers spoiled by the roomy girth on their three season quilts and wish to upgrade their dedicated winter bags would like some more room please. Just a couple of inches more at the shoulder, hip, and knee level, not necessarily down to the footbox.

Just a couple of inches more at the shoulder, hip, and knee level, not necessarily down to the footbox.

The reason a lot of winter bags are built with large foot boxes is to be able to wear double boot liners in the bag, as well as storing water bottles and other clothing “down below.”

I’d work on the phobia you have as at 6’ 170 lbs  you should have plenty of room. And with wanting the dimensions you do and under 4 lbs it’s probably not possible to build. I’ve gone through the same struggles but I’m quite a bit wider than you.
