Hi all,
I’ve been helped here in the past and now it’s time for a new tent as my 23 year old Integral Designs “Sil Shelter” is getting old.
I love this shelter but recently had some problems with critters getting in on a recent hike in Tasmania.
So, I am looking for something new.
I like the thought of the Solplex tent , except for the price and it’s cuban.
To me, Cuban is not going to last 22 years like my tarp tent.

I plan on having carbon fibre poles (I do not use trekking poles and hate to carry them just to use as tent poles and fording rivers and keeping dogs at bay, LOL)

Anyway, I was looking at a few but hopefully you guys will clue me on on something around 1 lb without being Cuban.   (expensive and I don’t know how long it would hold up)

Hopeing for something in the $300 range.
Thanks in advance for any help in steering me in the right direction.

I don’t know of a bug proof shelter that is around 1 lbs and not Cuben ( did you use the bug net inside your SilShelter ?) but for about 26 oz (plus your CF poles) and $225 you can get a fully enclosed shelter that is not all that different from what you had.

Yeah, ^that or maybe an SMD Lunar Solo if you’d rather a side entry but my vote is for the TarpTent if you can deal with the front entry.

That ProTrail looks good as I do like my sil shelter. Just sometimes it’s not OK with bugs, Burmese pit vipers and bushy tailed possums. LOL.
Has anyone on here bought one?
Experience with it?
Just wondering how it’s going to hold up.

Thanks for the help guys.

Yer makin’ me snicker Glenn :)

Tarptent is one of the oldest, most revered, most innovative and highest quality cottage manufacturers around.  I suspect almost everyone on this site has either owned, or knows someone who has owned, one of their shelters.  Owning a Tarptent is practically a “UL backpacking rite of passage”.

If the design works for you…and TT has MANY different designs to consider…you will be quite pleased with it.

This will surface info that might help: BPL Search protrail + review

I had a Contrail, the predecessor to the Protrail and dodn’t care much for it.  I think there are other TT designs that are better and more innovative.  The Protrail is the evolution of the “original” Henry Shires Tarptent and the same basic design TT has had in thier lineup for 15 years.

The Protrail may be a significant improvement over the Contrail and you can’t complain about the price or weight.

All Tarptent s have full bug netting and a floor so bugs shouldn’t be an issue.

Check Yama Mtn Gear for a couple shelters which are similar in weight to the Protrail and also in your price range. The Swiftline and Cirriform are great shelters. They both use SilPoly which won’t have the sag issue that SilNylon does.

Something else to consider – a Big Agnes Fly Creek lands at 33oz, is free standing-sh and $235.
