Can anybody speak to the relative merits of  Lone Peak 4.0 vs 4.5 vs 5.0?, My most recent pair is 4.0  and I’ve liked them almost as much as my 1’s, but they’re worn out. I’m wondering if I should get 4.5 or 5.0…

My 4.5s recently blew out so I visited the famous Pete Bland fell running store in Kendal.

The 5 had a similar fit – maybe a little wider. The outsole seemed a bit grippier, and the midsole a bit less squishy. But it’s basically the same shoe as the 4.5 – and even though I have wide, high volume feet the fit still felt sloppy. I tolerated the 4.5s rather than liked them – because I have trouble finding shoes that fit and they were the best of a bad lot.

The very expert sales people encouraged me to consider the Inov8 TerraUltra 2nd generation shoe instead, as it’s also zero drop and tends to fit the same people. In their view, it’s a better-made shoe with a longer life – and they know their stuff.

As I posted elsewhere I’m delighted with the TerraUltra – for me it’s a better shoe all round – fit, grip, midsole and construction. And although it looks narrower than the Altra, sole-to-sole it has the same width in the toebox at the most comfortable size. I think it fits a touch smaller than the Altra, so you might have to go up half a size. In the UK the price is a touch higher than the Lone Peak, but the extra life should more than offset this.

So before you spring for the Lone Peaks, you might want to give the TerraUltras a look.

The cushioning on my 4.5’s flattened out in 100 miles.  It’s like running on a piece of plywood with a sole glued on.  I’m hoping the new alter-ego mid-sole on the 5’s will be a vast improvement.
