Lightest Fly Fishing Setup?

I am on the hunt for a new setup. I have a few tenkara rods and they are fun for small water. I try to camp at lakes and I’ve found myself missing the ability to cast a line farther out whenever I have only brought a tenkara setup. My current fly fishing setup for just the empty reel and rod is pushing 9oz. Of course I didn’t consider weight when buying it because backpacking wasn’t the intended use. I have brought it a few times anyway and aside from the spreadsheet weight, I had a lot more fun at the lake casting a full setup.

Now I want a dedicated setup just for the pack and I have come across a few lighter and smaller rods. Top of the list for lightweight and price(as in expensive) is the Douglas Upstream 3806. At 8′ long, 3 weight and 6 pieces the weight is only 1.75oz.

For the reel I have found an alternative that weighs in at a scant 1.4oz

Anyone ever try out the Mavrk Stinger micro reel? It’s more of a line holder than a reel but for small alpine fish, sstripping line to land a fish is no issue. I am debating on the slightly heavier (1.7oz) billet aluminum version just for the piece of mind vs composite. It also might help a little more with balancing the rod in hand?

Anyone else go down this road and have some models I should be looking at?

Wow, only 9 ounces! That’s impressive. My setup is about 11.6 oz:

  • Orvis Clearwater 5 wt 9′ fly rod (in a fluorescent bulb tube) – 152 g / 5.3 oz
  • Big Y Fly Reel (w/backing and rio gold) – 179 g / 6.3 oz

I’m quite sure I could save weight on a lighter reel. Definitely want to watch this thread.

Hey Joe, my weight is for the blank rod and empty reel, not rigged. Like when I compare shelters or anything else, I look at base weight first. In this case fly lines can be cut short. For high alpine fishing you don’t really need backer. Different ways to pack and carry, etc.

My hesitation on the rod side of this discussion and the Upstream I mentioned is castability. Wind is usually a factor more than it’s not. Is it worth carrying a sub 2oz rod that’s 8′ long or will I be happier with a 9 or 10 foot rod for an ounce or two penalty to be able to fish into the wind with more ease? Line weight plays a factor in this as well.

I’ve already decided to order the Mavrk reel to try it out (but having issues ordering on the site right now). If the rod was under $200  I’d just give it a try but for $500 I figured I would see what others suggest.

I’ll follow up with the reel and as other more traditional suggests get brought up, it will give me some ideas if I don’t like the Mavrk.
