The original Thermarest lightweight pad I had for over a decade was rectangular and had diamond shaped holes cut in the STANDARD foam so it was relatively warm compared to the current Prolite. BTW, Thermarest gave me a free Prolite when I returned the delaminated Lite mattress to them!

I agree, the new Prolite is not all that warm and I trust Thermarest’s R ratings. For sub-freezing temps I carry a roll of 1/8″ thick closed cell foam flooring underlayment (yes). It seems to do the trick but adds 4 oz.

Exped synmat. Pretty warm; very comfortable; use the schozzle to inflate it–the schnozzzle also serves as a very lightweight pack liner (it’s waterproof). Not noisy. Or get the down filled version for extra warmth. Or get the wide version: for a few extra ounces you get that much more comfort and warmth.

I use a GG thinlite pad beneath this for extra, extra protection and scootch more warmth. It’s primarily for puncture protection, not warmth, so no need to discuss the under/over issue.

I keep looking at other pads but nothing looks like a better bet to me than my Synmat and Downmat LW setup. The new mats don’t seem to be any lighter for the size and certainly no more comfortable. I did try the Synmat as well but the shape just doesn’t work for me,
