Hello,

I was wondering if anyone had experience with a down parka that was reasonable lighter but that had a durable outershell?  It just seems that many of the outer fabrics used would easily rip if they got caught or abraded on anything but I could be wrong. I usually need a XLT or XXL.  Thank you.

Goosefeet can probably handle exactly what you need.

Hi Brett,

When I’m winter camping and have a fire, and want to protect my parka, I put a secondhand wool dress shirt (because the dress shirts are the lightest weight–like a Sir Pendleton) that’s a size or two larger over the top when I get to camp. This also protects it from brush, thorns or anything else that might rip it.  That way I have durability and protection when I want it, and a lighter weight parka when I don’t need to bring that extra protection.  I know that doesn’t directly answer your question though–it’s a workaround :)

I would get Ben at Goosefeet to make one with whatever face fabric you like. You want indestructible, get a nice Supplex or Taslan on there. A little lighter than that, some taffeta around 1.5 or 2 oz will still be much tougher than the 7d and 10d fabrics that the light jackets mostly use.
