Taking Jordan’s advice from Episode 71 of the podcast about sleep layering systems. I already have a good heavy down quilt, and want to purchase a light synthetic sleeping bag I can use as the outer layer for cold conditions, and also use it during the summer in hot weather. I want it to pack as small as possible and weigh as little as possible, probably something that would be for 60-70 degree warm nights by itself. I live in central California so depending on the season and where I go elevation-wise I get the full variety of conditions throughout the year.

So light, synthetic, big enough to be an outer shell over my quilt when cold, and packs small – recommendations for a good bag? Thanks in advance!

If you’re open to making your own gear, sewing a Climashield Apex blanket/quilt/overbag is pretty straightforward.

That said, the first products that come to mind are the Nunatak Graupel (full overbag), Enlightened Equipment Enigma Apex, or the MLD Vision quilt. EE might have a zippered Apex product, not sure.

Nunatak favors a bag layered overtop a quilt. Ryan (per the podcast) favors a quilt overtop a bag. Two quilts stacked is doable but could be a little fussy for some.

Enlightened Equipment makes a quilt with a full zipper called the Convert if you want something that can fully enclose a quilt an eliminate the dreaded drafts. It also comes in widths wider than 58″ if you need something wider to layer over a bag or quilt.

MLD Vision is my vote. I have it and use it for warm/cool weather trips. Last winter i used it on top of my 0° down quilt inside my bivy, on the snow and ice, in the Adirondacks.. overnight temperatures hit 15° below 0 and i was so toasty it was not even a thought.

Very helpful everyone, thank you! I went with the Mountain Laurel Designs Vision, looks like exactly what I need. Cheers!
