It seems like everyone is liking the Katadyn Befree water purifier as it has a much faster flow rate than the Sawyer offerings.  But how does it compare to something like the LIfeStraw?

The one I’ve seen is a water bottle that requires you to suck water out of it. How well does this work for cooking water?

Lifestraw also weighs 7.8 ounces vs. 2.3 ounces for the BeFree.

There also is just a straw at 2oz.  Actually scratch this because you really can’t filter water to cook with.  Sorry.

Well….why do you need to filter water for cooking? Aren’t you boiling the water you are going to be cooking with or are you doing some kind of cooking where you don’t first bring the water to a boil?

I guess that is true, I could always use my bandana to filter out the larger things.

With the BeFree you are getting a filter, a water bottle and technically an extra 1L of water storage for no extra weight all for 2oz. Kind of a no brainer.

Good point. I guess the filter would also get rid of dirt, etc. I’m not sure I want water run through a bandana if it was used for typical bandana things. :)

<p style=”padding-left: 30px;”>I never filter water from a lake, river, or stream for cooking and I don’t bring it to a rolling boil.  Just enough to barely begin a very slow boil and I turn it off.  That’s been my M.O. For over 40 years and never had a problem.  Cow troughs are the exception – filter the chunks with a coffee filter, treat with chemicals of choice, let sit for an appropriate amount of time, bring to a full boil and enjoy!</p>
