Headed to the Maze or thereabouts. Trying to decide between La Sportiva Tx4 (full leather) and Tx3 (mesh) approach shoes. I know the orthodoxy is toward mesh, and that’s what I’ve always done down there. But, I’ve also always had sand, grit, and thorns in my shoes. Wondering if leather might be a better option? Not anticipating alot of wet/wading. Thoughts, or better yet, experience?

I have used the La Sportiva Boulder X (leather) with a pair of SimBlissity Levagaiters for the past decade plus in the Canyonlands. Â Love the combination and wouldn’t change a thing. Â Keeps the dust and debris out incredibly well. Â I use Smartwools thinnest PHD running sock and have never had an issue with hot or wet feet.
Catching up on some old business here. I opted for the leather. Was very pleased to have sand, grit, stones out of my shoes (used light/low gaiters too). Feet quite sweaty, even with relatively cool late summer/early fall temps. Pick your poison.
If the weave is relatively tight, sand/dirt shouldn’t be a problem. Gaiters can help though.
Oh, just saw your own response.
