MY DAD AND I ARE HEADING UP FROM MINARET LAKE TRAILHEAD ON AUG 22.  WE ARE PREPARED FOR 5 NIGHT.  PLAN ON GOING CROSS COUNTY OVER TO 1000 LAKE.  I AM THINKING WE ARE GOING TO JUST DO A LAYOVER DAY HERE AND HEAD BACK THE HIGH TRAIL.  WE ARE THINKING OF DAY HIKING UP TO LAKE CATHERINE.  ANYTHING ELSE WE WOULD BE MISSING?  OR SHOULD WE JUST HANG OUT AROUND 1000 ISLAND LAKE?  WE ARE STILL THINKING OF GOING TO TUOLUM MEADOWS AND TAKING SHUTTLE BACK TO MAMMOTH, BUT THINK JUST STAYING UP HERE WILL BE BETTER.

WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK ABOUT THE DAY WHEN WE LAYOVER AROUND 1000 LAKE?

THANKS.

That hike up to Lake Catherine–or overlooking it–is fun. Well, maybe not the talus…The ridge between 1000 island and Davis lake–well it comes down off the shoulder of Mt. Davis–is easy to ascend, with great views; then you can descend a bit to where you cross over to Lake Catherine. Or you can descend the other side of the ridge to Davis Lake and pick up a trail that will take you back to 1000 island. A restful day. No talus.
