What’s a proper setup for layering synthetic insulation over down, in clothing and sleeping bags? I know environment and shelter would dictate the exact setup and I don’t have any plans laid out…but assuming it’s cold and humid like winter in the Pacific Northwest. I could be exposed under a tarp or sealed up in a winter tent, or somewhere in between.
I want to use my 20 degree Enigma with my 2.5 oz Apex quilt on the outside, they fit perfectly. Will I have enough barrier from the humidity? I’ve read here that down will collapse eventually just from the air, will my body heat dry my down quilt enough each night that I could spend a few weeks out without it collapsing? Is 2.5 oz of Apex enough? I do have access to a nice synthetic mummy bag that’s the same weight as the quilt combo but not nearly as warm if the quilt stays lofted.
Checking an old thread, Stephen M mentioned a suggestion from an instructor to use a 100g primaloft layer over a light down jacket, I have a thin 60g Outdoor Research Cathode and a thick Montbell Alpine Light. I don’t expect to combine these two but I’m curious if others have tried such a lopsided pairing. For now my plan would be fleece under the synthetic hoody.
