I did the search but didn’t find as much info as I wanted.

I have a 20 degree top quilt
A 30 degree top quilt
A 45/50 degree top quilt

With temps predicted to 8 degrees would you layer the 20 degree with the 45/50 or 30?

EE has a nice chart here.

However, ultimately, my limited experience is that, other conditions being equal**, some people need a lot more insulation than others… So I think that the chart is a good starting point, but one needs to know whether one typically sleeps cold or hot…

I saw that chart but wasn’t sure about the real world use of it. My summer 45/50 is same weight as my 30 from EE so weight wise it’s even on the choice.

Take the 30 if its the same weight

if its too hot you can just loosen the top quilt more

better to have some margine at those temps … Not to mentionat those temps ull likely get condensation that freezes to the outer quilt which will degrade the rating

personally i think the EE table is a bit optimistic

for a 40F overquilt/bag i use 15-20F increase conservatively, and with a quilt youll need to have additonal head insulation

the other thing to consider is that a synthetic top quilt is VERY useful at those temps as the condensation will then freeze in the outer layer (synth) rather than down …. However even with synth that reduces the insulative capacity, but much less than down

;)
