KUIU tents

Some here may not know about the KUIU mountain tents. They deserve a close look for those needing very windproof tents that will also withstand a heavy snow load.

MOUNTAIN STAR-> These tents are more for 3 season use as they have fewer poles than the Storm Star models but I feel they are fine for all but the very worst winter weather. As with all KUIU tents they go up (and down) with the inner tent pre-attached to the fly.

STORM STAR-> KUIU’s strongest tents have three exterior poles that. like the Mountain Star, clip on the tent. This makes for a bit faster setup than threading poles through pole sleeves.

So just one more brand with good design and build quality to consider for you “extremophiles”.

Nice looking tents. They were just on sale at pretty decent prices. Good company. Good products. Excellent customer service. I didn’t get a tent, but I took advantage of their sale to get a shirt and some brush pants. I got the pants yesterday. Valo camo pattern. Perhaps the most comfortable pants I’ve ever put on. Quality was top notch. I expect them to last for years. Cry once and I did.

Glad you like the KUIU pants. I have their Attack pants and like them for shoulder season use. Very water resistant. I also have the Yukon rain parka, oversized so I can fit layers under it.

WARNING: KUIU jackets and parkas all fit slim so get at least one size larger. They are seemingly cut for a distance runner’s build.

The Brush Pants were slightly on the slim side. I’m between sizes, so they worked for me. I think the Valo pattern works pretty good in my area. A fair compromise elsewhere. It matches one of my packs. I can be stealth if I wanna be.

The shirt I received is good quality with great ventilation along the backbone and behind the armpits.  I ordered one size up expecting it to be a little baggy, but it was a slim fit over an AD 90 top.  I’d go two sizes up for a loose fit. Made for carrying a pack.

I like their tents. I think they’re still using nylon though. . I was tempted at their sale prices. Just a tad heavy, unless I was on BLM land in Nevada, setting up camp for a few days while I explored the area.

I would contemplate purchasing a storm star, but, I really don’t want to see the glow-in-the-dark rams head on the inner tent ceiling. The hunting connotations are a bummer for me (and my wife).

I have to say that the  Storm Star looks like a reasonably priced alternative to a Hilleberg Allak 2!

Truthfully, if someone starts talking about guns, I can’t keep up. I’m not a hunter. If you wanna give me some elk though, I’ll stock my freezer. I imagine Kuiu would pick up a few customers if they directed their focus away from hunting. I wish they’d offer some lighter options. I do respect them for their quality and that they stay loyal to their heritage and existing customers. It’s a different community that intersects ours of which the vast majority are reputable. I like some of Kuiu’s products. They serve a purpose and they work well. For what they are, they’re fairly light.

TT, The Brits seem to be liking the Storm Star. Not sure of its price with the high Brit import duties (“tariffs”) but likely less than Scandinavian Hilleberg and Nortent gear.

If you ever watch Brit “wild camping” on YT their mountain tops the winds can be horrific, thus one of the reasons they like the very solid KUIU Storm Star.

I have a Kuiu backpack frame and suspension that so far I’ve only carried on a few days hikes. The padding is a bit stiff for most of my needs, but I’ve been thoroughly impressed with the quality and design. They sold out this month to a conglomerate of investors, keeping the same CEO, with plans of expanding their retail end. I’m keeping a wait and see attitude. Sometimes it doesn’t work out so good.

Outdoor something on YouTube. Luke. The guy that’s always getting caught in the rain. He did a good review of one of their tents.

Eric – with British outdoor YouTubers there’s a bit of a fad for storm chasing to capture dramatic content. It’s not all as bad as that!

But forecasting our complex weather is a bit of a dark art – there’s a significant risk of being caught in something unexpected on exposed and remote terrain. So people here do favour wind-worthy shelters like the TrailStar, DuoMid, Soulo and StormStar.

I’ve seen more than one review where the StormStar was preferred to the Soulo – just as stable, more space and better venting, they claim, for a very similar weight and a much more wallet-friendly price.

Kuiu have an outlet here and you can pick it up for just over £600 all taxes paid. The Hillie is over £1000. So the attraction is obvious!

The Storm Star is an outstanding shelter in a blizzard, and very stable in high winds. Four pole intersections, and all poles terminate at the ground, with good stability in all orientations/directions.

AAAARRRGGGHHH!  KUIU acquired by a PRIVATE EQUITY FIRM! This is definitely not good. These firms are not “invested” with their hearts and generally, whether a medical services group or a fly fishing company they are run into the ground in search of profits. CRAP! Terran, you are giving me an Excedrin headache.

Yeah, the same CEO is in charge but will they let him truly lead, as in developing new products with QUALITY?

Geeze LOUISE!

I’m withholding any reviews that they’ve requested. Customer service in the past was good though perhaps a little out of touch. I wrote them looking for matching buckles. They very generously sent me some for free. I only received one side of the buckle which was useless. Quick to respond when I have questions. I’ll wait and see. I’ll recommend them with an asterisk attached.
