I’ve got a 250 weight Smartwool zip neck base layer that I love, but it weights about 11 ounces. I’m considering picking up a Peloton 97 in May when they get more in stock, but am curious how it will compare to the 250 weight wool in terms of warmth. I will generally wear it as a mid or outer layer, not next to skin.

I think the warmth is similar to my Ibex Indie Hoodie, which I believe is around a ~200 weight wool. It has replaced my Indie as the light midlayer I take on trips.

I don’t know wool “weights” so have this question: how would the Peloton 97 compare to 100 weight Polartec Fleece?

The 97 is not as warm as a 100wt fleece, but it’s damn warm for it’s weight. My cold kit consists of the 97, Houdini and down puffer. That takes me down to 15F.

Thanks! Helpful to get an idea what I should expect. I used to use a 100 weight fleece, but it seemed like overkill, and I didn’t like how much space it took up.

Yes, before the 97 I too used 100wt TKA100 fleece. It’s warm but heavy, bulky and didn’t breath during hiking like the 97. The 97 checks all the marks, love the hood too.

I have a 97 hoodie and a smartwool 150 quarter zip and have been trying out both basically daily along with the brynje  thermo ss shirt recently in wet/cold/windy typical obx winter conditions. Doing my own little version of Seber only without the science ;)  The 97 is definitely warmer than the 150. The 150 has a nice high tight neck but the 97 has the hood. That may be a significant factor. Those 2 layers with a wind shirt like the Tachyon and you could go to some pretty darn low temps with the occasional vent to stay dry.

I really like the hood on the 97. Zipped all the way it fits nicely around my face leaving just my eyes, lower cheeks, nose and mouth exposed. I am also stoked at the performance of the brynje and the short sleeves are a perfect call by Ryan in the layering article. The 97 slides right over the short sleeve brynje and there’s no hassle get the layers adjusted  where the 97 sleeves can tend to get grippy with some types of base layer fabrics.
