I’m looking for a decent down jacket for my 13 year old for 3 season backpacking in Utah/California. I found that eddie bauer has a boys cirruslite down jacket for $40 that seems like it will be good down to around 40 degrees or so. Thinking of pairing that with a fleece.

Any other good options out there?

All my kids’ stuff came from thrift stores. They were hard on gear, and buying new would have been painful. I would go with a colder temp rating than you are likely to encounter for a 13 year old. 40F rating might be ok with a fleece, hat and gloves.

I also found it hard to bring enough food for teenagers when backpacking!

At $40, I’m guessing it has sewn thru baffles. A windshirt over the top will help trap air and can add warmth.

He can probably get away with most men’s small jackets.  Uniqlo is decent for the price and pretty warm.  My wife and I have them and they are warm.

$40, or even $60, seems like a tough order to beat. The jacket looks good on paper. At age 13, depending on his height and weight, I may also recommend a Men’s S over the kids size.
